Mentors,

Thanksgiving is here again, and it is time to be thankful for what we have and think about those who may otherwise not have a Thanksgiving meal.

Dr. Perry and Councilwoman Blackwell are again encouraging students with the Appeal for a Meal effort. As StEPP Mentors, service is one of our pillars.

We have a goal of donating the fixings for FIVE Thanksgiving meals (details below) per class! That means getting your mentees involved and encouraging them to donate items with StEPP. Encourage them to go to Fresh Grocer or the supermarket over the weekend and pick up one or two items to donate.

They can give you the items or directly drop them off at the PCP Office with Bryan (Griffith Hall, 2nd floor). Items should be delivered by Monday to the office or Tuesday between 8:30am and noon to the small parking lot between Whitecar and Griffith.

To the University Community:

 

For the third year in a row, University of the Sciences is working with the office of City Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell (Philadelphia's 3rd district) to provide Thanksgiving meals to West Philadelphia families who could not otherwise afford such a meal. USciences is working in partnership with Mr. Dimitri Dimopoulos, the owner of Allegro’s Pizza, who is personally donating frozen turkeys. For our part, we are asking for donations of a bag of food with all of the fixings for a traditional Thanksgiving meal for a family of 4-6 people.  We are asking all interested individuals, academic departments, administrative offices, and student organizations to pitch in together and contribute a donation of all of the foods that will create a delicious Thanksgiving family meal that will complement a turkey.  

 

One meal for six consists of the following:

 

·         Two (2) 14 ounce cans of fruit cocktail or applesauce

·         Two (2) 6 ounce boxes of Stuffing mix

·         One (1) 15 ounce box of mashed potatoes (or one bag of white or sweet potatoes)

·         One (1) jar or two (2) cans of gravy

·         Two (2) 14 ounce cans EACH of 2 different vegetables (for a total of 4 cans)

·         Two (2) 14 ounce cans of cranberry sauce

·         One (1) package of dinner rolls

·         One (1) dessert of non-frozen pie, angel food cake, or bag  of fruit

·         One (1) package of napkins

·         No Turkeys!

 

The cost of 1 meal for six is approximately $30. Thanksgiving meal donations can be brought to the parking lot between Whitecar and Griffith Halls on Tuesday, November 25th between 8:30 am and 12 Noon.

Last year, our campus community donated over 150 meals. This year, we are challenging everyone to help reach 175 meals. Please help a deserving West Philadelphia family have a Happy Thanksgiving!
