Now, although I have had Copernic Desktop search installed for many years I had not been using it for some time. I needed it again late last year and I now note in the firewall log , 'first network activity' was recorded on the 20th November at 5:31 pm, possibly caused by a new version update and probably a good indication of its first loading for many months. Is there another standalone freeware that I can use and that does not have such a limit? I need to be able to do searches/filters on file names and/or their contents/authors/creation dates etc. for all kind of files like e-mails, spreadsheets, word processor files, databases, text files, etc. etc.
Sometime back on my XP machine, I dumped Copernic for Windows Search 4.0 for Windows XP. I find this is much more convenient. A very similar search tool is included in Windows 7. This is a little more difficult to configure, but generally gets a good press.

Now, as I looked again at CDS > Tools > Indexing Status, I saw that it was reporting a number of indexed documents that was about 25% larger than the number shown when I searched in CDS for @all. Apparently @all did not, and perhaps was not supposed to, display all indexed documents. Nonetheless, the number shown in the Indexing Status dialog was still less than half of the total number of files that were supposed to be indexed.

Since it does not carry out real-time searches, it may happen that some elements present on the computer do not appear in the results because they have not been indexed yet.
