I am facing problem while installing matlab 2014b on Ubuntu 14.04. After mounting the iso file, and through terminal when I type ./install I get permission denied. And when I type sudo ./install then I get sudo: ./install command not found. I just don't understand what's the problem.

Download the Matlab toolbox installation file SparseReg.mltbx. Double click the downloaded file and you should be good to go. If it does not work for some reasons, follow the below instructions for Matlab version < 2014b.

Psychophysics Toolbox Version 3 (PTB-3) is a free set of Matlab and GNU Octave functions for vision and neuroscience research. It makes it easy to synthesize and show accurately controlled visual and auditory stimuli and interact with the observer. Some of its functionality is available as part of Python toolkits like PsychoPy. For commercial support and services visit www.psychtoolbox.net. Follow us on Mastodon or Twitter @psychtoolbox

In order to install and use the Psychtoolbox, you must already haveMatlab or Octave installed on your computer, unless you install forOctave on Linux via the NeuroDebian repositories. If you already haveMatlab or Octave installed, start it up and read on. On Windows youmust have installed GStreamer 1.22.5 MSVC edition or later versions.

If you have an old version of Psychtoolbox installed, the installer willprompt you if it should automatically delete those version from yourfile system and do so if you agree. If you want to delete the foldermanually, apply the following procedure.

These are simple instructions to get you up and running with the PsychophysicsToolbox on a computer. It is assumed that you already have Matlab or Octaveinstalled on your computer, or you are installing for Octave on Linux via theNeuroDebian repositories. See the System Requirements.

If you installed Matlab before installing Psychtoolbox for Matlab from NeuroDebian, the installation will ask you for the location of your Matlab installation, and ifyou want it to rename some Matlab libraries to fix compatibility issues caused byMatlab. Answer YES to these questions, this is crucial! Otherwise hardwareaccelerated graphics will likely not work with Matlab later on.

If you installed Matlab after installing Psychtoolbox, or after you have upgradedMatlab to a more recent version you must rerun this Matlab compatibility fixingscript via: sudo dpkg-reconfigure matlab-support.

You could then execute Matlabs savepath command to add it permanently if you wanted,or after customizing it for your special needs, or in the typical case simply callptb3-matlab whenever you need to run a standard Psychtoolbox work session.

At the end of a successfull NeuroDebian installation, after first launch of your Octaveor Matlab with the new Psychtoolbox, run the script PsychLinuxConfiguration from withinMatlab or Octave, and follow the interactive instructions and questions to optimize yourLinux system for data collection.

Only for basic testing and very simple use cases:Debian and Ubuntu and potentially other Debian/Ubuntu based Linux distributions alsoprovide Psychtoolbox directly from their repositories, but these Psychtoolbox packagesare usually very outdated, often years behind versions, and they support GNU Octaveonly, no Matlab, and not certain functions like Eyelink or Datapixx:

In general using the NeuroDebian repo above is more convenient and provides moreup to date packages for Octave and Matlab, but the distribution packages will dofor a quick test drive, e.g., from within a Live Linux system, booted from a USBflash drive, for quick compatibility testing.

If you choose installation from the distribution directly, bypassing NeuroDebian, after package installation, run the script PsychLinuxConfiguration from withinOctave once, and follow the interactive instructions and questions to optimize yourLinux system for data collection. You may be able to do without this step for aquick basic test drive or maybe for pure student training without need for hightiming precision or precise low-level control of your hardware and special equipment.

You must install the 64-Bit GStreamer-1.22.5 MSVC (or later versions) runtime from gstreamer.freedesktop.org even if you do not need multi-mediasupport! Do not install the MINGW variant, it will not work, but likely crash!Make absolutely sure that you install all offered packages. Read help GStreamercarefully for this purpose, before downloading and installing GStreamer.

Note: You still need to execute operating-system dependent or Matlab/Octave dependent setup steps like installing GStreamer, or other packagesand configuration steps mentioned above. Essentially, do everything operatingsystem dependent mentioned in the previous sections before proceeding here.

If you installed Psychtoolbox-3 for Linux from NeuroDebian, Debian orUbuntu, your operating system will automatically notify you of newPsychtoolbox releases. After your approval, it will automaticallyupgrade the toolbox to the new version.

If you need timely expert support in resolving download or installationissues, we also offer paid support under this link.If everything else fails, contact the Psychtoolbox forum with adescription of what you tried.

Participants enrolled in this MATLAB workshop will learn how to read in, analyse, and visualise. The mission of the Software Carpentry project is to help researchers be more productive by teaching them basic computing skills. Researchers often spend much of their time wrestling with software, but most are self-taught programmers. As a result, they spend hours doing things that should take minutes, reinvent a lot of wheels, and still don't know if their results are reliable. To tackle this problem, Software Carpentry runs two-day workshops at hundreds of sites around the world. These hands-on workshops cover basic concepts and tools, including program design, version control, data management, and task automation. Participants are be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems.

Requirements: Participants must bring a laptop that (a) has a few specific software packages installed, and (b) is able to connect to the wifi network at the University of Melbourne (see instructions for both below). They are also required to abide by Software Carpentry's Code of Conduct.

Prior to the workshop, University of Melbourne staff/students should ensure that their laptop can connect to UniWireless. Instructions on how to do this and where to get assistance can be found here. Attendees from other Australian universities should find out (from the IT website of their home institution) how to connect to the Eduroam wireless network.

When you're writing code, it's nice to have a text editor that is optimized for writing code, with features like automatic color-coding of key words. The default text editor on Mac OS X and Linux is usually set to Vim, which is not famous for being intuitive. if you accidentally find yourself stuck in it, try typing the escape key, followed by ':q!' (colon, lower-case 'q', exclamation mark), then hitting Return to return to the shell.

Notepad++ is a popular free code editor for Windows. Be aware that you must add its installation directory to your system path in order to launch it from the command line (or have other tools like Git launch it for you). Please ask your instructor to help you do this.

The default shell in all versions of Mac OS X is bash, so no need to install anything. You access bash from the Terminal (found in /Applications/Utilities). You may want to keep Terminal in your dock for this workshop.

For OS X 10.8 and higher, install Git for Mac by downloading and running the installer. After installing Git, there will not be anything in your /Applications folder, as Git is a command line program. For older versions of OS X (10.5-10.7) use the most recent available installer for your OS available here. Use the Leopard installer for 10.5 and the Snow Leopard installer for 10.6-10.7.

MATLAB is a very popular data analysis environment. It's a commercial product, however most universities provide free licences to their staff and students. University of Melbourne people can find instructions on how to install Matlab on their personal laptop here. Participants from other institutions should ask their IT department for assistance.

The instructors at the workshop will be using latest version of Matlab (2014b). Since each new version has a slightly different look and feel (not to mention new functionality that isn't available in previous versions), it's important that participants also install the latest version.

During the installation process, you'll be asked whether you'd like to install any additional toolboxes (e.g. statistics, curve fitting, aerospace... there are many). The only specialised toolbox required to complete the workshop is the parallel computing toolbox, however if there's other toolboxes that look relevant to your research you may wish to install them for future use. Note that it's not a good idea to install all the available toolboxes, as this makes the installation process take much longer (i.e. don't install a toolbox unless you are very likely to use it - you can always install additional toolboxes later on).
