Hello neighbors--
Apologies for the lateness of these minutes, which are I am barely getting out to you before the next meeting (May 9). The past two months have been very busy.
Please email me if you have any corrections or additions. Thanks!

Stephen Foster Neighborhood Association

Meeting Minutes

March 14, 2013

Parkview Baptist Church Meeting Room

President Robert Pearce called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. A quorum was present, including Vice President Barbara Ruth and Recording Secretary Deidre Bryan. The agenda for this meeting and the minutes of the January 10, 2012, meeting were approved by consensus.

Crime watch report

Officer Nicole Tierney reported that there were four neighborhood burglaries and one arrest in the preceding two months. She also warned us that there has been another flare-up of pesky solicitors in the neighborhood, usually selling water treatment systems, home alarm systems, and magazines. Barbara suggested to her that it would be a good idea to put this warning on the local TV news. Some of the solicitors are aggressive, and one of them was allowed to visit a resident’s bathroom and subsequently began to search through the rooms of the house, looking through bedroom drawers etc. Officer Tierney warned us again not to open the door to anyone we don’t know.

Koppers report

We had a discussion about the recent public meeting held at Stephen Foster Elementary School regarding the signing of the Koppers consent decree by Beazer and EPA. Public attendance was good. The Department of Justice attorney who spoke at the meeting and answered questions said that she had never before attended a public meeting to discuss a consent decree, and that she was there as a result of the strong public interest in the Koppers issue. Garrett Garner told us that the City response letter regarding the meeting had just been sent to the DOJ.

Robert, Kim Popejoy, and Pat Cline have since had a meeting with Beazer and EPA representatives for a Koppers update, and will meet with them soon regarding the Cabot site; the recent five-year review of the groundwater impacts of contaminants at the site were worse than expected.

Kim reported that the Superfund Art Project has traveled to seven Superfund cities since the opening exhibit in Gainesvile. It has also been exhibited at the EPA regional office in Atlanta and will next go to Boston.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
