Hurricane Dorian Update 8-30-19 10:15 a.m.

August 30, 2019

10:15 a.m.

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - Recent forecast models show Hurricane Dorian taking a more southerly track and slowing. As of now, potential for storm impacts are not forecast for the Alachua County area until Tuesday of next week. It is important to realize that this storm is a slow moving, marathon event not a sprint. The slowdown of the system allows residents to further prepare for impacts later next week.

The County remains prepared to open shelters next week, depending on weather conditions, but there are no immediate plans for shelter openings.

Alachua County Public Schools, The University of Florida, and Santa Fe College are in the process of deciding on possible closings next week.

Alachua County will have sandbags available for residents today, August 30, until 6 p.m. and Saturday, August 31, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Wayside Park (11855 N.W. US 441, Gainesville). There is a limit of 10 bags per person. Sandbags are also available in Gainesville today until 5 p.m. at Public Works (405 N.W. 39th Ave.) and Saturday from 8 a.m.to 5 p.m. at Citizens Field (1400 NE 8th Ave.) while supplies last.

The 311 Information and Rumor Control hotline will remain active through the duration of this event. Use it to verify the most up to date information on the hurricane. This number cannot receive texts. Please use 911 for emergencies only.

Residents are encouraged to have an emergency preparedness plan, a basic emergency supply kit, and to register for emergency alerts at www.AlertAlachua.com.

To stay informed about major storm conditions, follow Alachua County on Facebook and Twitter, and subscribe to the County's press releases.

For more information, call 311.

If you have a disability and need an accommodation in order to participate in a County program, service or public meeting, please contact the Alachua County Equal Opportunity Office at (352)374-5275 at least 2 business days prior to the event. TTY users, please call 711 (Florida Relay Service).
