All,
EPA’s local TASK team regularly provides updates regarding the Cabot/Koppers Superfund Site at the bi-monthly Stephen Foster Neighborhood Association meetings. Due to Covid-19, the SFNA has not been able to meet since January.
On the Koppers portion of the site:
Beazer East/Tetratech has completed follow-up ISGS spot treatment in the South Lagoon and former Process Area to address residual areas of contamination. The ISGS workplan for the North Lagoon and Drip-Track Area has been submitted to US EPA for review. Soils sampling in the area on the west side of the site where the new stormwater ditch is to be moved has been completed and discussions are currently underway with the Florida Department of Transportation regarding abandoning the old ditch, which runs through the primary source areas in the middle of the property. On the eastern portion of the Koppers property, Verizon will be moving their fiber optic cable (which lies within the former CSX right-of-way) to the far eastern portion of that ROW to accommodate the expanded subsurface containment wall and protective cap.
On the Cabot portion of the site:
The new stormwater pond and subsurface containment wall around the primary source area have been completed. The liner over the top of the containment area has been put in place and covered with a protective layer of soil to prevent UV light from damaging the liner. Cabot/demaximus temporarily demobilized in early April due to Covid-19 issues and will return to complete the remediation process on the Cabot side of the site when safety conditions allow.
Stay safe,
Robert
