Ok, now that I can slow down and take a breath, I will let you all
know how this whole thing went down.

Our cuttings left Australia on the 28th of April, arrived in LAX
customs on April 29th and were awaiting processing. I called the
plant inspection office yesterday, and talked to the official there.
He hadn't seen our box yet, but promised me he would go and look for
me, so that I didn't have to worry over the weekend. Ha. :)

Last night, the tracking information showed that our box had cleared
customs and was released for shipping as of 10:39 yesterday morning!
Yeee Haw!

This morning, I told David Elliott that we had cleared customs and
were released for shipping, and he suggested that I check at my local
P.O. and see if I could catch the box before it got on the delivery
vehicle. Thanks David, good suggestion - they got my box off just
before the delivery man left for the run.

Because I thought I had all weekend, nothing was addressed, or ready
to go, but with the assembly line help of my kids, every one's boxes
made it to the post office before they close at 1:00 today, so be
looking for cuttings Monday or Tuesday.

Anyone who wants their delivery confirmation number, please let me
know, and I will email that to you.

I haven't actually looked at my cuttings, so I am not sure how things
look, but plan to do that now, so I will attach photos to this thread
after I unwrap the cuttings. I would love it if everyone wants to
share photos and ID's so we can all get an idea of what these IML #'s
look like. Nothing seemed mixed up, I only took the time to look at
names on the tags, as I was racing the clock, but of course if you
notice that you have someone else's cutting, please let me know.

Thanks guys, I am sure all of your positive thinking moved things
right through as smooth as can be!!

Thanks Sara for all the work you did for us.

I've been inspecting all my plants this week, looking for buds and at
new leaves so this will give me something else to play with for a
while.

It finally stopped raining today so I was able to work on the
shadehouse some more and get the plants arranged that's in it allready
so I can take more out and make room for my cuttings under the lights.
I got my potting table ready so I don't have to pot plants/cuttings on
my kitchen counter any longer.

Thanks again! I'll post pictures when they arrive.

That's some amazing turn around time there!!!! First day in
Australia, the next day in California and the next day in your hands!!!
This is probably the shortest time a D.L. consignment has taken to
reach it's destination. Great work with a little of my help!!!

Thanks guys - you are all really welcome. I am sure that everyone's
positive thoughts and good karma helped tons, because customs can be a
bit tricky really. I have heard horror stories about boxes being lost
or really held up in customs. Our own Ann Strahm has had to deal with
having half of one of her orders sit in customs for darn near a
month. YIKES!!

Huge thanks to David for telling me to get myself to the post office
on Saturday, and ask if there was any way my cuttings did get in, and
the luck of catching the delivery man before he left for his daily
run.

I know I said that I would post pictures, I haven't had a moment yet.
If I get done with my watering, I will get cutting photos up. I was
pretty happy with everything, except my Hoya thailandica cutting was a
bit scary looking.

Don, don't sweat the invoice. David Liddle will send you a bill via
email, but sometimes it takes him about 2 weeks, and I am sure he
didn't expect us to have everything this soon.

Ok, here are pictures.  They don't represent the cuttings well, because I have everything chopped up into 2 or 3 pieces...depending on how things looked.  Some of you will recognize my long neck beer bottles.  Ha.  They are the same ones that I have been using since 2005 to root hoya cuttings in.  Amazingly, none have ever broken.

Bryan asked me to stop and pick up his comics on Saturday after getting everyone's boxes to the post office, so that meant I had to wait even longer to play with my cuttings.  Ha, knowing my bill would soon be hitting his email box, I didn't complain too much.  There were lots of people there "gaming" and drinking old fashioned root beer in the long neck brown bottles.  I asked if I could have the empties, and the owner of the comic store told me that they don't pay for glass recycling.  Ha.  I was pretty dirty as I had been repotting earlier, and had bought a 65 pound bag of sand, and have to body hug it to get it out of the cart.  I didn't waste my hoya time explaining that I planned to recycle, but not for cash.  Heee. Heeee.

Most of the cuttings look good, but thailandica, and telsomoides are a bit tough looking.

enjoy.

round leaf one is IML 1024. This is my second try on that one, so
hopefully it will make it this time around.

Oh, good morning Anne, I was just trying to figure out which picture
was in the middle at the bottom. On the Waymaniae photos, the leaves
near the top are the IML 1756, the round, wavier and less jagged edged
one is the IML 1024. I can guarantee the leaf on the far left bottom
is a 1024 leaf. The size difference is pretty huge too, the jagged
and pointy leaves are on the 1756, and they are in the middle and up
at the top of the picture = quite a bit smaller than the coin shaped,
wavy edged leaf of the 1024 waymaniae.

Cheers,

Sara, do you root all your hoya in water or are they just in holding
untill you get them potted up?

I've gotten some brown beer bottles I use but l like the look of those
green ones. What brand are they. Maybe I need to visit the beer
section next time I'm shopping. We don't drink beer but I could give
it to the hoya.

Ok, so my mail lady usually drops off mail around 9:30am!! THEY'RE
HERE!!!!!!!!!!! Again, thank you so much Sara!! This time around
most of my hoyas I got aren't the "thicker leaved" variety like I got
last year.
They all look pretty good, just a little thirsty, so for now I have
them soaking in some ST and will place in there little baggies to root
later on! ;)
Sara, it's funny you say this is your 2nd try with waymaniae 1024,
because it is also my second try. Although the first failure was my
fault :( I had used the baggie method last time and everything looked
great, but I had left two in there too long and they turned to mush.
Well, live and learn. Oh, one other thing I got this time around was
elliptica, and I love the leaves even more in person than from pics
I've seen!!!! There leaves are a little smaller than I thought they
would be -- but that just makes me love it even more!!!!!! I am
soooooo stinking STOKED!!!!! Hoya high!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a great post to see on a Monday morning. Hugh thanks to you Sara
for your dedication and super quick turn around time.

David, how do you root cuttings? I was curious since you have a
greenhouse if you add humidity to your cuttings (like put them in a
terrarium) or is just being in the gh enough?

Thanks Shanna

Hi again Sara!

Thanks for answering my funny question. I must have meant the 1756
then because it is in the middle of the photo and more wavy edges. (I
was trying to say in the lower middle of the waymaniae photo, but it
must have been to early for me) Thanks to your picture, I just mailed
David and tried to get that one also.... If it is not too late
already. Thanks for sharing your pictures!

Hey Nicloe, odds are good that David simply didn't send that/those
cuttings. I have had that happen several times over the years, and it
won't show up on your invoice. Something to be aware of though - if
you order from David Liddle again, he keeps track of what people
order, and you may be suprised in the future when the cutting you
ordered several years ago shows up unexpectedly! Ha. Sort of blows
the budget process all to hell though.

Last spring, I didn't get the species from sarawack, and it was a
$25.00 cutting, but hey, I got it this time. Heee. I sort of know
now to give myself some cash leeway.

Jo, yes, I root all of my cuttings in water in the beer bottles. I
have had at least 95% rooting success this way. The baggie method, is
sheer death in my house, and I had about a 50% loss going right to
soil.

Glad to hear that the cuttings are getting to everyone ok.

Cheers,

Oh Nicole, I forgot to say - I don't think our cuttings were mixed
around by customs. Everything was laying in a very tight, unmixed up
way, if that makes any sense, when I opened up the box, but it is good
to put the word out just in case.

On the first order that I hosted, I had to keep one member's cuttings
for 3 weeks, and I rooted them for that person. When I finally sent
everything, they were missing a cutting. I totally freaked, thinking
that I had lost it or something but it turned out that it wasn't sent
to begin with. Do keep us updated.

Tami, Linda, Nicole, and anyone else who has their cuttings -

I would love to see pictures. You would think I would have a chance
to peek at what everything looks like, but it is always such a race
against time to get things turned around, that it just looks like a
pile of green when reaching for the nearest name tag.

WOOO! They were on my porch when I got home! Yippeeee! The leaves
on about half of them are a bit limp and wrinkly, but I was able to
cut them in quite a few pieces to give them extra chances. I have
confidence in the little guys! They rarely let me down! I'll upload
them to the computer and get them on the site or on Flickr soon.
Sara, that's good to know about David keeping track of what cuttings
people buy. I ordered pentaphlebia (sp? too tired to look at it
right now lol) and purpurea fusca again as I had lost them the first
time. He sent me HUGE cuttings this time. I cut them in about 4-5
different pieces! I wonder if he figured that since I was ordering
them again that I must have lost the first ones???
Anyway, thanks again Sara and I'm so glad everyone is getting their

Don, the hoyas you asked about is an unidentified species. It's IML
0260 sp. Philippines, described as having small pink flowers and oblong
green leaves.

We finally got some VERY much needed rain last night when some severe
thunderstorms moved through the area. Hopefully it was enough to help
in finishing to put out that wildfire that has been burning for close
to two weeks now in Myrtle Beach. The fire was 100% contained just
under a week ago but was still burning. On last nights news they said
is was pretty much out but firefighters were still watching round the
clock to make sure no hot spots flared up again. That fire destroyed
80 homes and damaged over 100 more. I live less than a half hour from
where it started at and you could see the smoke from here. This is the
first major wildfire we've had in this area in quite some time and it
ended up burning well over 20,000 acres.

You may not have to wait till next year. We sometimes do 2 orders a
year to D.L. one in the spring and then another in the fall it just
depends on how many people show an interest in doing a fall order as
well. We'll just have to wait and see!!

Jennifer the little round leaved hoya is IML 0260 sp. Philippines. The
majority of what I ordered this time were unidentified varieties. I
already grow most of what D.L. offers in the general listing making
it harder and harder for me to decide what I want with each new order.
So this time I just looked through the unidentified section and made a
list of what sounded interesting to me!!

Jo, I didn't get the welsh mountain zoo one this time. I've thought
about ordering it in the past but for one reason or another just
haven't done it yet.

At this point in the game I have absolutely no idea what i'd even
consider ordering from D.L. again if we did a fall order. With the
exception of just a very few,I already grow all of the hoyas that I
set out to get. There's still several that i'd love to add to my
collection but they are proving VERY difficult to track down even
through David Liddle!!!

most of the ones i'm still looking for are not available in the states
and if any of the commercial vendors have them they are not making it
known. Below is a list of things that i'm still interested in if
anyone has them. I'm willing to pay or i'm always up for a good
trade!!!

buotii--white form
gildingii
nyhuusiae
griffithii--the REAL one IML 1856-- I have the species India already.
This species is an impostor which is in wide circulation as hoya
griffithii but is not., I'm about 99.9% sure that it was knowingly
sold to me by a U.S. vendor under the wrong name.
pottsii-Vietnam IML 1193
megalantha

So you can see by this list that these are all very scarce hoyas
especially in the states

Sorry I hijacked you thread Sara!!!!

Phew Don, so glad that you got your box!! That is simply mean of your
mail carrier to keep on driving, when she knows darn well that you
have a box on that truck!! You have amazing self control - I would
probably have hijacked that mail van!

Oooo Shanna, are you sure you don't have a migraine coming on? I
should think that you might have to go home early! Heee. Everyone
here has such amazing self control. I think a David Liddle box is to
hoya collectors what Christmas is to a 5 year old.

That's for sure, and you feel like a spoiled rotten brat because I
never seem satisfied. I always am left going well that went quick--
now how can I get more??? :):):)
David - I probably don't even have 1/4 hoya as you have, but I do
understand the wanting to get more of the not really collected by
anyone else. Like you I have scoured the net for a few with no
success :( I feel like an addict somehow, where I really really want
to get a hold of a certain hoya, and try everything I can to try to
get one. I personally think it's really cool when you can have a hoya
or two that really hardly anyone else has.

Ahhh you're right about that Sara. I tried hard not to think about
it. Time flew since I've been so busy at work. It made seeing them
on my porch all that more exciting. I uploaded all my cuttings to
Flickr. I'll try to post the link here. I wish I had taken pictures
of the cuttings before I hacked them and potted them up. Some of them
were so long I could cut them in 3-4 pieces! Thanks again so much
Sara and I'm so glad everyone's has arrived safe and sound.

Oh I wish the migraine thing would work. I work for the state,
Missouri legislature and we are only 8 days away from the end of
session. I work late on Tuesday's and some have been either midnight
or one in the morning when I get to go home. It's crazy. But during
the interium we get to take off any time so that's nice.

Definately christmas at my house

Oh Jen, I completely missed your photo link the first time I read your
post. Shanna is right, all of your cuttings look very nice. I can
never get mine to root in the soil or in the baggie methods, so I am
stuck with the multi-step water rooting process.

I am noticing root nubs forming already though.

Thanks for sharing pictures. I haven't ever seen greenii up close...I
might have to consider that one for a future order.

I have tried water and the baggy method and neither worked for me.
It's strange how things work for some people and not others. I put
some of the weaker, thinner leaved ones in their pots and then put
inside a zip-lock baggy to keep them humid. That seems to work for
me. Knock on wood.
I neglected to comment on your cuttings Sara, they are all very nice.
I really fought against ordering the Sarawak (sp?). That one has
gorgeous leaves!

Nicole, just curious, what did you order that you didn't get?

I have never tried the baggy method, or using a baggy over a potted
cutting. And I have lost most of the thin leaf cuttings I have tried
to root, though in my defense, the majority came with one trade and
spent a long time en route to me. I think the only one that has
survived is cv Iris Marie. Which is ok, cause I don't prefer thin
leaves on hoyas.

What I do is just pot them up in a very aerated mix, and mist like
crazy. I think as long as the cuttings are healthy, most methods will
work. I have also found that longer cuttings root better for me, at
least 3 nodes. I am not sure why, I know alot of people chop them up
into small pieces, but almost every time I have done that, none
survived. So usually I try to keep the cuttings on the longer side,
maybe just cutting into two or three pieces.
