There seems to be an awful lot of confusion going on in regards to this
particular hoya. How or when it all occurred is beyond me.Attached
you'll find a picture of the REAL hoya purpureo-fusca IML 0728. The
first picture is of the flowers followed by 2 pictures of the leaves.
The 4th picture is of an open cluster of H. pubicalyx pink-silver
flowers, the hoya which is quite often sold as purpureo-fusca. I forgot
to get a pic of the pink-silver leaves for comparison so i'll do that
tomorrow. How these 2 hoyas got mixed up is beyond me as they look
absolutely nothing alike.

David, I have seen the posts on Garden Web re: the two different hoyas
too. I have both Hoya pubicalyx pink silver / silver pink and
purpureo fusco and agree with you that they do no lool alike at all.

I guess the confusion would have to have stemmed from mis sales of
pubicalyx as the purpureo fusco? Thanks for giving us such a specific
pictoral.

your pictures are awesome, David.

A long while back I got a cutting labeled purpureo-fusca in a trade as an
extra, but I think it is Pink Silver - I was hopeful at first, but as it
started to grow it was obvious that it wasn't what it was labeled as.I gave
it to my mom since I already have a Pink Silver for every room.

Not all are the same, I think leaf shape differs from plant to plant, but my
Pink Silver's leaves are very long, on the narrow side, and deep glossy
green, with the light flecks. I think it is one of the most beautiful
hoyas. I also do not see any similarity to purpueo other than they both
have green leaves and dark pink flowers.

David,
Your pictures are great. Great blooms. I'm so glad, after the freeze last
night, that I waited to put the hoya's out.

I think that at some point someone must have started selling one of
the publicalyxes as pupureo-fusca and this is how the name has spread.
I've never seen the true one until earlier this month, this is why I
was confused.

The real pupureo-fusca is a beauty.

Tami, speaking of freezes, the past 3 1/2 weeks here we've seen temps
ranging anywhere from the mid 60's to mid 80's with night time temps
in the 60's-70's. Guess what?? Tonight and into tomorrow morning we
are under a frost/freeze warning!!!! It really sucks!!!!! I'm past the
point of being ready to move the hoyas outside already!!! I had a
feeling it was going to happen though because we usually aren't out of
the woods until about April 15th. After that we'll have some nights
get into the 50's but the chances of frost after that are normally
slim to none!!

20 or 25 years ago, H purpureo fusca was one of those holy grail hoyas
which was very rare in cultivation and people used to sell H
publicalyx under that name to get a sale, as it was, well, a little
different to H carnosa......I seem to remember the correct plant being
identified at the time all those years ago, poo hooing all those who
claimed to have it.......what they actually had being H publicalyx.
The name's just stuck. H purpurea fusca now is one of the cheaper
Hoyas on peoples sales lists...it wasnt all those years ago and a high
price was asked for its imitator
