My name is Stephen Keane, Editor-in-Chief at News Mag Media, and I'm just sharing something that may be of interest to organisations working in STEM outreach and primary education, for the 2026/27 school year.
Based in Leitrim, we have been publishing The Primary Planet – a curriculum-linked monthly news magazine for upper primary pupils (4th–6th Class) – since 2011. We currently work with over 500 primary schools, with a paid circulation of just over 12,000 copies each month and an estimated readership of approximately 60,000 pupils.
Season 2 of STEM MATTERS launched this year.
STEM MATTERS is a 16-page supplement (mini-mag) included within The Primary Planet. Each issue is developed in partnership with a research organisation or STEM-centred business. In essence, each issue of STEM MATTERS offers an organisation the opportunity to 'open their doors' to primary school pupils around the country and shine a light on their work in an engaging, age-appropriate and fun way.
Recent partners have included:
- Irish Fossil Heritage, led by Dr Jess Franklin and Professor Maria McNamara
- IPIC (Irish Photonic Integration Centre), led by Dr Caitríona Tyndall
- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), led by Annette Cahalane
- Met Éireann, led by Grainne Connolly
- CÚRAM, led by Dr Sarah Gundy
- Nimbus Research Centre, Dr Clíodhna Sargent
- I-Form, led by Michael Golden
With the final term of this school year almost upon us, we are now inviting expressions of interest for Season 3 (2026/27 school year). We plan to publish a total of 9 issues during the year, and have three of these booked already. So, six issues remain available.
If creating STEM content as Gaeilge is a priority for any organisations, for Season 3 we will have three slots available in our Irish-language news magazine called Eipic (in partnership with COGG). Eipic will have a similar circulation of between 10,000 and 12,000 copies, but will be distributed to approx 250 gaelscoileanna and schools in the Gaeltacht area.
