Hi Stem Cell Cyclist Gang and Fellow Bikers,
I just wanted to let you know of another fall ride (25, 50 or 100 miles) from the Franconia Community Church up I-93 in NH on September 19. This is the site to register: http://www.granitestategrind.org/ <http://www.granitestategrind.org/>
It should be spectacular and the minimum donation is less than $100. All proceeds will benefit Honduras Hope,

which establishes grassroots programs to help young Hondurans get out of the vicious cycle of poverty and find their way. Personally I've decided that the key ingredient to all these charitable efforts including bi- monthly 56ers blood drives (next one this Saturday, www.blooddriveforlife.com <http://www.blooddriveforlife.com/>  ), PMC, Honduras Hope, Safe Passage, etc. is building community though healthy activities like hopping on our bikes with friends. The Granite State Grind and Roll is another great opportunity. Come on up; I'd love to ride with you even if I am a Slow Poke Turtle!

(from Peter Swanson) Elliott, I am hoping to get your gang there.  It is a beautiful and exciting day and the donation is tax deductible. Let Gerry Healy know that it would be my privilege to try to keep up with him if he is able to ride.  The music and the cook out after the ride which is catered by the Common Man is free and a nice end to the day.
The 50 mile ride would be a piece of cake for a PMC finisher (not for me however).
Thank you,
Peter

Paraphrased details from Peter on the connection between the Granite State Grind and Roll and its target charity, Honduras Hope:
Honduras Hope has been working with two indigenous communities in Yoro, Honduras for fourteen years and is staffed primarily by volunteers.  Bill Briggs, the person who initiated this current effort, has been working in Honduras for 30 years.  Bill is a retired minister.  His entire life has been devoted to social justice which began in Chicago working on housing issues for minorities.  Martin Luther King used his church during the civil rights movement.

Kathy Swanson, Peter Swanson's wife, had been looking for a cause and wanted to be sure the money and efforts went to the people and not a large administrative organization.
In the United States churches give money to the organization.

The things that we support are:          Education - children cannot go to school without uniforms and we buy the uniforms, materials and pay tuition.
We provide scholarships for students to attend college.
Women's cooperative - women are the backbone of Latin culture and we support their efforts.
Medical needs - we pay a nurse who lives with the people in the mountains and she serves about 25 patients daily.
We fully support a dormitory in the City of Yoro for those students who live in the mountains where there is no middle or high school so they can attend school in Yoro.
We work with and support a farmers' cooperative.
Kathy has initiated a girls' empowerment program in order to build self esteem and reduce early pregnancy.
I teach organic growing methods to the children to show an alternative to chemicals and pesticides being used presently.
We support a vocational school.  One of our members built and funded the culinary school that is part of the vocational school.
Most of the ideas for how money is spent comes from the community itself.  We merely guide and advise them.
All Honduras Hope trip participants are volunteers who pay for all their own expenses when visiting there to help out.
Peter and Kathy have been making this trip every year for a while now.

Thanks for reading this far and considering what's in it for you!
