Hopefully you are familiar with the good work that Bike Not Bombs does, if not read more below and go to their site.Hi ALL!
On Saturday June 15th, you can provide wheels to those in need (and clear space in your garage) by donating your used bicycle to Bikes Not Bombs. Bicycles will be collected from 10 AM to 3 PM, at the Unitarian Universalist Area Church at First Parish in Sherborn, 11 Washington Street (route 16).Bikes Not Bombs is a non-profit organization based in Jamaica Plain that has been using the bicycle as a vehicle for social change since 1984. Each year, they collect more than 6000 used bicycles and refurbish them for use in one of their important and successful programs. Most of the bicycles are shipped overseas micro-enterprise bicycle shops in Africa, Latin America or the Caribbean, where they provide critical transportation and employment to communities in need. One of these programs is Ability Bikes Cooperative in Ghana, which is cooperatively owned and staffed by people with physical challenges, mostly due to polio. The shop refurbishes bicycles and sells them at affordable prices to the local community. By providing a highly valued commodity and technical skills, Ability Bikes has transformed social perceptions of physically challenged people in the local community. In addition to these important international programs, Bikes Not Bombs runs local programs in which Boston youth learn bicycle mechanics and safety, and gain leadership skills, and self esteem, and/or vocational skills.Bikes Not Bombs requests a $10 donation with each bicycle, to help defray the cost of refurbishing and shipping the bicycles. Bicycles of all types and sizes are welcome, as well as bicycle parts, tools, and accessories (helmets, bags, lights, pumps, locks or clothing).
