Greetings!
My name is Molly Detjens and I am a Conservation Warden (a state law enforcement officer) for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. We use education, community outreach and enforcement to protect the natural resources and people of Wisconsin. Part of my role is to assist with our agency’s recruiting and outreach efforts, and I am reaching out to you to promote the conservation warden career and offer my assistance to anyone who might be interested in learning more. Protecting natural resources is important and relevant to everyone, yet many people do not even know about our unique career.
Our team is responsible for protecting natural resources, which are essential for the lives, health and happiness of every person. We are committed to creating a culture of inclusivity, building trusting relationships, and thoughtfully engaging and serving our diverse public.
The conservation warden career requires many skills, including strong communication, an ability to connect with the public, and a passion for helping people and protecting natural resources. We look for applicants from a very wide variety of backgrounds and with a variety of interests (we’ve hired applicants who majored in communications, natural resources management, biology, forestry, criminal justice, education, journalism and many other topics).
The global pandemic has greatly impacted recruitment efforts, and undoubtedly has left students more uncertain about future career prospects. In an effort to better connect with students, we’ve begun reaching out to individual professors/instructors to start conversations and explore possible recruiting and educational partnerships. We’ve begun hosting virtual presentations, and would be happy to have a conservation warden speak with your class virtually during one of your normally scheduled lectures. Similarly, if you know of anyone in the student body who might have an interest in natural resources and a passion for helping people, we’d love to talk to them one-on-one!
We plan to open a hiring process for conservation warden positions in April of this year, so we are trying to reach out to as many people as possible to share our story, learn about them and offer advice on becoming a conservation warden!

Thank you for your time and any assistance you can offer. I look forward to hearing from you,
Molly
