Tomorrow, April 23, is the next talk of this semester for our Campus Stem Cell Lab meeting series. We will start at noon promptly. We will continue to provide sandwiches and chips starting at 11:40 am (water will be provided but if you want something else to drink please bring your own.) We will be back in The Wisconsin Institutes of Discovery (WID) for these. We will be meeting in the H.F. Deluca Forum in the Town Center on the first floor. Please ask at Information Desk if you are unsure where to go.

Date: Tuesday, April 23

Speaker: Zhongwei Du  (Xiang Li and Su-chun Zhang, co-authors), Neuroscience (Zhang lab)

Title: Fast Generation of Functional Subtype Astrocytes from Human Pluripotent Stem Cells

Abstract: Differentiation of astrocytes from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) is a tedious and variable process. This hampers the study of hPSC-generated astrocytes in disease processes and drug development. By using CRISPR/Cas9-mediated inducible expression of NFIA or NFIA plus SOX9 in hPSCs, we developed a method to efficiently generate astrocytes in 4-7 weeks. The astrocytic identity of the induced cells was verified by their characteristic molecular and functional properties as well as after transplantation. Furthermore, we developed a strategy to generate region-specific astrocyte subtypes by combining differentiation of regional progenitors and transgenic induction of astrocytes. This simple and efficient method offers a new opportunity to study the fundamental biology of human astrocytes and their roles in disease processes.

Reminder: If you are talking this Seminar Series for credit, please check in with Sue Gilbert at the back of the room.

Next talk: The last talk of the semester will be on Tuesday, April 30, with Heinrich Jasper, Professor, Buck Institute for Research on Aging, University of Southern California, speaking “Age-related stem cell dysfunction: lessons from DrosophilaThis talk will be in the Wisconsin Institutes of Discovery (WID), H.F. Deluca Forum in the Town Center on the first floor, and will include sandwiches.
