Opera is a great Chromium-based alternative, and it's been around even longer than Firefox. It includes modern staples like sync and ad-blocking, plus VPN and a crypto wallet. The unique Workspaces feature, which brings virtual desktop-like organization to your web browser, is truly a killer.

The typical GUI method to remove DEB, RPM, Snap, and Arch packages involve browsing or searching for "opera" using the distribution's default package manager. Alternatively, you could open the DEB or RPM file you installed to open the package manager directly to the appropriate software page. Once located, click Remove.

Unless you're using a fringe distribution, the aforementioned steps should have helped you install the Opera browser on Linux successfully. The exact process to install the software might be a bit different for each distribution family, but the basic steps are more or less the same.

Hello, I use Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and yesterday I upgraded all my packages including Opera. Since then some pages crash when they try to load up all the content. Might have something to do with media content but I also encountered page crash when using the web version of Microsoft Teams and the Messenger sidebar app has to be reloaded every time I receive a new message. It also has about 20 % chance of completely crashing the entire browser.

The Easy Setup panel in the top-right corner of your browser will help you first setup and later customize your Opera browser. Easy Setup allows you to import data from other browsers, change wallpapers, manage downloads, and make Opera your default browser. Learn more about Easy Setup.

Set your favorite wallpaper or your own photo from your computer as your background to personalize your Opera browser. Add extensions from the Opera add-ons or Chrome store to further customize your browser.

You can also use Easy Setup to make Opera your default browser. With Opera as your default browser, all web links and web documents will open in Opera. If you have now switched over from a different browser, be sure to import your browsing data to Opera.

Millions of people have been using this browser on their mobile devices. I've been running it for years as my general day-to-day browser on my computer using an emulator. This is generally all I use and basically only use the big browsers for media content like video streaming. I've packaged the java version as an sfs-addon (2MB). The package contains the emulator and the browser. It's already setup and ready to use.

How to use:
Load the sfs and run from menu. Menu entry should be in the Internet section. Click Start to open the browser. This is pre-setup so you may need to change the screen size. Easiest way to do this is to right-click the microemulator tab in your taskbar/tray and select to maximize, close the application and restart.

Notes:
Your keyboard and mouse should work as normal for most things like with any other browser however some notable differences: Use the Opera Mini virtual keyboard to type numerals and special characters; to delete typing errors/text use backspace; 8 for quick down scrolling; 2 for quick up scrolling, etc. It's a bit of a learning curve in the beginning but that makes it part of the fun. This is for general browsing, you can't play media. Opera ceased development of the Java version in 2018 (now focusing on Android version, etc.) but it still works well on the Java platform.

This is just a heads-up! While in the past I used an older Opera Mini on my pda, that was
when Opera Software ASA was an independent Norwegian company. Opera is NO LONGER
independent, having been bought up by Qihoo 360, a Chinese owned company. The reason
I point this out, Opera Mini routes all traffic through Opera owned services to compress the
data, supposedly saving you data on a limited plan. This is similar to the VPN, though the
VPN is more for shielding you from snooping. Sounds good on paper, and when Opera
was Norwegian owned I could trust them for privacy. I cannot trust the new Opera, I don't
support Opera browser any longer.
Each user should be informed prior to utilizing any Opera software in current environment.

The application is still developed and run by the original company that started it in Norway. Two Chinese companies own 80% of the shares. It's still a Norwegian app operating from Norway with millions of users around the world.

It can distinguish itself from other Chromium-based browsers with its unique features and a well-made interface. Not to forget, its gaming browser, Opera GX, is one of its unique offerings that could use a debut on Linux.

What is it: Called the 'Opera One,' it is a complete redesign that aims to phase out the existing Opera browser with its modular approach for the overall design of the browser.

It took me a while to nail the problem, as the web is full of various video tearing complaints with different root causes. In all cases the root cause is down to video hardware acceleration and in my case at the web browsers level. Without further ado, here is the fix.

I've accidentaly lost my Opera session by moving a tab to a separate window, then closing main window with about 80 tabs opened first and new window second. I've managed to copy the /home/user/.config/opera/Last Session file to a safe location, and now I want to restore it. Unfortunately, when I copy it back to /home/user/.config/opera/ and rename to Current Session, Opera starts with only speed dial opened, my copied session file becomes Last Session again and Current Session file get overridden with empty session anyway.

Opera is designed to run on a variety of operating systems, including Windows, Linux, Macintosh, Be OS and the Epoc wireless system. The non-Java-enabled version of Opera 5.0 for Windows is 2MB in size; the Java-enabled version is 9.5MB.

In early December, Opera began offering a free version of Opera 5.0 for Windows. The free version of Opera is supported by a single banner ad. Customers who are averse to ads have had the option of continuing to pay $39 per copy. Microsoft and AOL/Netscape offer their browsers for free.

When Opera released the free Windows version, company executives said they planned to use customer feedback to determine whether to make available free versions of Opera for other operating systems. In the first month Opera made the free Windows version available, 2 million copies were downloaded, a company representative said. Opera has not yet tallied downloads for the second month.

Opera is in the midst of striking deals with portal companies and other resellers to include Opera as part of their wares, Hvistendahl said. The Opera browser will be embedded in the Sony eVilla Web-surfing appliance, he said. And the company is close to finalizing a deal with a mid-sized portal company, which it expects to announce within the coming weeks, Hvistendahl said.

Who says the browser is dead? Norway's Opera, with a loyal base of eight million users, says it plans a stock market listing in March at the Oslo Stock Exchange (OSE). "After developing and refining the technology and commercial side for nine years, Opera Software is now ready for public listing," CEO Jon S. von Tetzchner said in a statement.

Opera Software develops browsers for desktop, smart phone, PDA, iTV and vertical markets. Partners include IBM, Nokia, Sony, Motorola, Macromedia, Adobe, Kyocera, Sharp, BenQ and Sendo. The company makes most of its money in the mobile phone Internet browser market. Opera's browser for desktop PCs has only a two per cent market share against Microsoft's 96 per cent.

In related news, The Mozilla Foundation yesterday announced the immediate availability of a new preview release of its next generation web browser, Mozilla Firefox. It is a new name for the open source stand alone browser that was previously available as Mozilla Firebird.

Zotero is free and open source, meaning its source code is open and continually improved by an active user base. Zotero is compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is compatible with the Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Opera browsers, and has plugins for Microsoft Word and LibreOffice.
