Eg I use Stellarium for different projects. It would be useful to save a custom configuration file for each project to recall later rather than having to tediously remake them after every Stellarium starts.

An example is;  displaying an equatorial view (rather than alt-az) with ground and atmosphere off and other detailed settings made up required for the project. Save it as say  Config "project name." Then, when I wish to load this configuration, I could load it from a drop-down list ready to go. After one is finished the default configuration can then be restored from the same dropdown menu or a keystroke.

You can select a custom config.ini file at startup of planetarium as a parameter of the program. See Stellarium User Guide.

More elaborate differences involving data files can
be selected with different values of --user-dir.

I have experimented with using symbolic links to share
data subdirectories among different user-directories.
(Carefully! Backups are my friend.)

I have experimented with running multiple instances of
stellarium concurrently with different "port" values to
allow a remote control to choose among them.

You can create shell aliases or scripts that set multiple
options with a single short command.
