Dear Team,

Good Day,

was trying to add the new comet in Stellarium, but it says object not found.
I tried searching with different search inputs too.

25B, Swan I'm getting the same error message.

Yes, I use the same method, but it not yet listed

And what is "25B" supposed to be? See the instructions below on the same dialog. Better, use the other dialog to download a list from which to select.

I generate ephemeris from pccp or neocp, because the object doesn't appear even in Horizons yet, and then I convert the data and pasted them in bright nova file for Stellarium ( which I deselected internet update)
After this any custom object is visible

If SWAN25B is a Nova, you did probably the right thing.

This method just displays many comet positions as fixed points, with the positions generated in ephemeris. They are fixed on sky regardless time input in Stellarium

Tried something else and worked. I generated ephemeris from project
pluto (https://www.projectpluto.com/ephem.htm), where it generates
orbital elements too. Then I input these elements into the attached
file and read it from stellarium in the solar system editor.
I attach the txt file with two comets (just for checking). The
original file with all the comets elements is from MPC
In the screenshot you can see SWAN25B as a regular comet in
Stellarium. The white dots are from the input of the previous method
(conversion of neocp ephemeris to a nova.json file for Stellarium)
which are in perfect agreement

In the comet import process, you have the option of using a URL or a file.  I was able to take the orbital elements from Find_Orb and put them in MPC format.  You will probably need to delete it manually once it's given an official designation.  Just save the line below to a text file and import it, just make sure to select "comet" rather than "asteroid" (won't say why I'm giving that warning).  The generated positions seem to agree with other charts posted on the comets ML.

Since some mail readers will likely mess up the spacing, below has all of the spaces replaced with _.  Save it to a file and do a search and replace on _ with a space.

Excellent, Done I think now I know how to add these manually before they get officially added to stellarium or given a proper name

Dear Greg Miller,

Thank you so much for the information you shared — it’s really appreciated.

I just wanted to confirm:
I believe there is an update on the orbit, correct? (2025 09 13.0254)

Also, could you please advise how to get the updated dates? If I replace the same file with the updated one, will it work, or does the previous file need to be deleted and re-uploaded with the new line?

The comet is imported into Stellariums database, so once you've done the import process, you can delete the file, do the same process again if you want to update the elements.  Though I imagine it'll get an official designation fairly soon.

But, to produce a new orbit, get the observations from : https://cgi.minorplanetcenter.net/cgi-bin/showobsorbs.cgi?Obj=SWAN25B&obs=y

Then go to the on-line Find_Orb page, paste in the data from the above URL and click the "Compute Orbit and ephemeris" button:

You'll want to put it into the format for the CometEls.txt from MPC: https://www.minorplanetcenter.net/iau/MPCORB/CometEls.txt
They have a description of the format on their site, but I can't seem to find the link right now.

It now has the official designation C/2025 R2 (SWAN), so just update the comets normally and it should show up now.
