I am trying to view a lunar eclipse.,...where do you view from...? I am looking from the sun so I could see the earth pass between the sun and moon,...but it is not showing the eclipse just a pass by an inch or two away on my screeen

You would need to be on the earth facing the moon at night

If you're on the sun the earth will block its shadow on the moon.

The diameter of Earth's penumbra caused by the Sun at the distance the Moon has varies between 16,000 and 16,600 km. So you have a good chance of seeing a penumbral eclipse, even one where a partial eclipse of the Sun is observable everywhere on the Moon.

You are, of course, correct for Earth's umbra.
