Here is a sort of question, suggestion, musing.

It has long been my desire to have a way to import into Stellarium a
custom (or user defined) catalog of stars. An example might be a
historical catalog of stars whose positions could be compared to their
current (modern) catalog entries in Stellarium.

I know from previous posts to this list that others have also expressed
a desire for such a feature (for their own reasons).

Now as I am not a developer the standard answer - to write a plugin or
contribute code - is realistically a non runner.

I know that Stellarium has a sponsorship scheme that supports the overall project
development and also there are probably many developers on here that
could execute the desired feature.

So as a proposition - if some individual were to offer the appropiate sponsorship
to develop this specific feature - would this be appropriate.
Just to be clear - sponsorship specifically targeted to create a custom catalog feature.

This is very much just a question at this point. I am in no way trying to create
difficulty so it this is a inappropriate idea then I apologise, my intentions are honourable.

Further discussion will depend on response.

Thanks for your time.
Regards
Frank C.

P.S. I know there are other software but other software are not Stellarium

Hi!

The initial support of custom catalogs (plugin Missing stars) in my todo list and first public version of this plugin are planned for the release 23.3.

Formally this is possible, but really the result will depend on the country of developer and country of sponsor. For example 2 Stellarium developers are living in Russia and of course OpenCollective cannot pay them. Of course the own implementation of custom catalogs support may be proposed by any volunteers and this work can be payable.

Such user star lists have been discussed for many (>10?) years now. However, the number of developers is not as high as we would all wish, and there was always something more urgent. For some applications the NavStars plugin has been extended, but user lists can be much more. Great to read that Alexander is preparing something!

I came up with a solution to this several months ago.

Back then, Alex agreed to create this.  He's a busy guy. Give him a chance.

Correct.
I asked question then but the solution proposed is not what I need.
I fully appreciate that he is busy a guy, I was not pressuring. I was asking a different question.

I see.
If you can figure a way to convert data in the old catalog to a json file, that should do what you want.
