I note in the satellite plugging there are several groups of satellites such as GPS, Irriduim, COSMOS etc. But I no matter how I try I can not isolate a satellite group in the sky. Eg I would like only GPS to appear. But checking boxes on or off and playing with all  the other settings changes nothing.. All satellites still remain cluttering the view. How do I isolate a satellite group in the sky?

Obvious solution: open Satellites plugin -> open tab "Satellites"
1. Select group" [all displayed]"
2. Select all satellites
3. Uncheck "displayed" option
4. Select group "gps"
5. Select all satellites
6. Check option "displayed"
7. Optionally press button "Save changes"

Still no effect.

Now (after saving) and restart Stellarium the satellites are totally absent no matter how I change anything.

I dd a restore to defaults and the satellites are back and I try your procedure again but again it has no effect. All satellites are still displayed.

What exactly you doing step-by-step?

Hope I  am not being pesky here but I still think the satellite plugin interface needs improvement. I opened it today (after a few weeks) to change satellite groups but again I did something wrong as labels were missing even though labels were checked. It seems there are too many steps and check boxes. If something is not done in exact right sequence it produces unexpected results. I would have thought the panel to the right with check boxes for satellite groups would be an easy way to check groups and their attributes (labelled/unlabelled, orbits/no-orbits  etc). But checking/unchecking these boxes has no effect.

Sorry, but are you tried read the tooltips for GUI elements? For example displayed checkbox has tooltip "display the selected satellite(s)" and I really do not understand why you expected that this checkbox will change settings for some group without any selected satellites?

Hi!

In any way I've changed behaviour of right side of GUI in Satellites tab: all elements are read only and clean by default (for example group in left top corner is was changed at the moment). The status of elements on right side of GUI may be changed when satellite is selected.

This update allow avoid misunderstanding the expectance of GUI behaviour.

Hi Martin.
Do you Select all sats in the group before you turn attributes on/off?
If you're in US, I can call to discuss.

Hi Jay

I'm not sure what I do as I have trouble with getting the sequence right. Maybe I'm just the odd guy out who just does not get it.

I just now switched off all check boxes
Then selected in the drop down Galileo for example
Selected all the Galileo of which there are only six
Then switched on "labels", "orbits" and "show markers..."

The screen lights up with hundreds satellites including the band of geostationary. Just want Galileos

I am in Australia.

Hi Jay

If you selected some satellite (or list of satellites), then you hide this satellite (or those satellites). If you have nothing selected, then you nothing changes.

I guess you want to hide all satellites - in this case you need select all satellites and unmark "displayed" field on right side of GUI for Satellites tab.

Then selected in the drop down Galileo for example

OK

Selected all the Galileo of which there are only six

OK

Then switched on "labels", "orbits" and "show markers..."

Which "show markers...", "labels" and "orbits"? Are you selected 6 satellites on second tab (Satellites) and switch to first tab (Settings) to manage satellites, which have defined options "Displayed", "Orbit" and "Do not update" from second tab. Why you doing it? This is very strange logical path.

The screen lights up with hundreds satellites including the band of geostationary. Just want Galileos

Why you expected to see 6 satellites only, if you did not changed "displayed" property for any satellites?
