question on protocol upgrade while catching up

Hello everyone o/

So I wondered what would happen to a core which is in catch-up phase if the protocol upgrade triggers for a vote?

1. The core would be successfully upgraded?

2. The core would break? (due to improper protocol version)

And is the aforementioned core would be able to cast its vote?
