Ihave been looking at videos on how to edit vocals in Garageband, but the main ones that were really of any help all showed a library option underneath the "vocals", "acoustic guitar", and "electric and bass guitar" options called "Legacy". They seemed to be running the same version of Garageband as me, but I don't have it, nor can I seem to find any information on how to get it. I have downloaded all sounds. From what I can find, it seems like it came from an older version, but Apple took it away for some reason??? I have a Macbook Pro I bought in December of 2014. I am not running the newest OS since it had bad reviews.
Previous versions of GarageBand (GarageBand '11, GarageBand '09 etc. had some instruments installed, that are no longer available in the newer GarageBand versions, or example the sound effect Instruments. also the Jam Packs, that have been sold separately are not included in GarageBand 10. If you previously had an older garageBand version installed or purchased the JamPacks, these sounds will appear in GarageBand 10 in the Legacy section, because garageband 10 can use these sounds. But the get them, you need to install the JamPacks or GarageBand '11, if you have access to installers for them. Apple does no longer sell them.
Thank you. I sure wish they came with the newer version. All of the extra vocal processor settings would have really helped a noob like me. Do you know if there's a way to find and safely download the legacy bits without the entire old program?
Many of the most interesting sounds are installed by the JamPacks. If you purchase and install MainStage 3, it will add the sounds and loops from all five Jam Packs. It is a bargain price, compared to what the JamPacks used to cost when bought individually.
I'm honestly too ignorant to know, to be frank. I was watching vocal editing videos and a couple people scrolled through what appeared to be more options than just compressed vocal, robot, fuzz, narration, etc. The legacy library had things like female blues singer, etc. I have no clue what I'm doing with editing, so extra presets would be of great help.
Perhaps I will see if I can find out if those are available in the Mainstage download. Those are definitely what was showing up in the videos. I started to look at Mainstage but when I saw it was for live performance I decided to not look any further. Thank you!
It recently occurred to me that I haven't updated my Sound Library in a while, and since there appeared to be a number of new instruments/sounds available I thought, "Why not?". I navigated to the Sound Library, selected "Download All Available Sounds", and all was well...
The first issue is that when all of the new session tracks appear, the default instrument that they appear as is "Tough Kit", which is one of the electronic drum kit options in the "Electronic Drum Kit" intrument library. This is slightly odd only because the default instrument that all newly created session tracks USED TO appear as were "Classic Electric Piano". I have no idea how or why *that* particular instrument became the default instrument for new tracks, but I kind of got used to it, and I don't understand why all of a sudden every new track I create defaults as "Tough Kit" (which, btw, I've never used in any of my songs).
The second, and way more distressing issue, is that once I updated my Sound Library, I noticed that a BUNCH of my favorite instruments have VANISHED. Specifically, the whole "Legacy" instrument library seems to have been "updated". Which is to say that a TON of instruments in the "GarageBand" a "Logic" sub-libraries are no longer available!
One other thing is that if I open any older sessions that I created prior to updating my sound library, all of the old "legacy" instruments are still there. It's only when I create a new session (i.e., post sound library update session) that these instruments are gone/unavailable.
I have no idea how or why *that* particular instrument became the default instrument for new tracks, but I kind of got used to it, and I don't understand why all of a sudden every new track I create defaults as "Tough Kit" (which, btw, I've never used in any of my songs).
Either you've specific that in your new tracks dialog, and/or you saved a "default" preset for that particular plugin so it always starts with that preset. That's a feature, and you can use it or change it as you like.
If you can explain what an item of affected content was, where it was stored on disk, and what's there now, we can look into it. Of course, you can always recover things that may have been deleted (if that is the case, which seems unlikely) from your backups, this kind of thing is exactly what backups are for.
Option-click an Instrument slot and choose whatever you want from the Legacy submenu.
Just as some info on what the "legacy" instruments are/how they work.
The legacy instruments are subsets of the ES1, Vintage B3, Vintage E Piano, Vintage Clav, Sampler, ES synths, etc. When loaded, the underlying synth engine of the "full fat" versions of the plug-ins is leveraged....with a restricted number of visible parameters/macros and a simple, non-graphical interface.
These instruments are retained for backward compatibility.
GB instruments are a combo of legacy instruments and sample library...so the old Apple Loops "instruments" are found in the Sampler library (or the Apple Loops library).
Screenshot A shows the path from "Legacy" to "Logic" to "Bass"... and Screenshot B continues from "Bass" to "Synth Bass" and includes a partial list of the instruments found in the "Synth Bass" sub library.
Compare this to Screenshot C, which is from a new session I just created (post Sound Library update)... you can see that when I select the "Legacy" menu, and then select "Logic", the only sub library choices I have are "01 Spaces", "02 Imaging", "03 Delays", etc.
They say a picture's worth a thousand words. Hopefully these proxies make sense?
Note that clicking on the setting names in the Library will automatically load the appropriate (legacy) plug-in.
Oh...and as a Q - understanding that old Logic or GarageBand projects use the legacy instruments - why the love for them?
Sure, there are some cool sounds and tweaking is simple with limited controls, but they are massively restricted in comparison with their full-featured counterparts.
Might be time to live a little "dangerously"....and explore Alchemy, Retro Synth, Sampler, ES2, the Vintage Instruments...and to do your head in - Sculpture. ?
I can see how in your library, when you select Legacy - GarageBand - Bass, you have the "full range" of bass instruments (i.e., the ones I *used* to have). And I can further see how, when you selected "Eighties Pop Synth Bass", and then Option + clicked on the instrument slot, the preset comes up.
BUT... look at Screenshot #2 below. This is what *I* see when I navigate to Legacy - GarageBand - Bass... I see this much smaller "menu" of instruments starting with "No Effects" at the top, and "Wave Bass" at the bottom.
It's labeled "Punk Bass" at the top, but you can see that all of the keys actually correspond to "Drum Machine Designer/Tough Kit" (which as I mentioned previously, is now the default instrument that comes up every time I create new tracks).
Bottom line is that I should probably, as you suggested, live a little dangerously and start to explore Alchemy, Retro Synth, etc... but for my own education (and sanity), I'd still like to know why I can't see/access all the old instruments that I used to be able to access.
The Option-click is only necessary if you want to manually insert a Legacy plug-in into the instrument slot/channel. Without the Option key held, the Legacy menu is hidden.
If you are choosing patches/settings, etc. from the Library, there is no need to Option-click the Instrument slot.
Just click the name of the sound you want to use...this will automatically choose and insert the plug-in....and will load the patch/setting/sound into the inserted plug-in.
Can you take a screen grab of your Sound Library window?
Logic Pro > Sound Library > Open Sound Library Manager
Outside of Logic itself...
You can view and delete Logic Pro content by choosing About This Mac from the Apple menu, clicking Storage, then clicking the Manage button for your system storage drive. Content for Logic Pro (as well as other music creation apps, including GarageBand and MainStage) is listed in the Music Creation section. You can view the capacity of the Instrument Library and Apple Loops library and delete each of these items.
If you delete Logic Pro content that is required for a patch or software instrument, Logic Pro "should" prompt you to re-download that content the next time you try to use the patch or instrument.
Ok...
Open Finder and browse to:
Library > Application Support > GarageBand > Instrument Library > Plug-in Settings > Analog Basic and let us know if your old settings are shown.
Also look at a few other instruments: Bass, Horns, etc. to make sure your old settings are there.
Just trying to figure out if the data is actually on the system or not.
In other words, I was expecting/hoping to see a lot of the old "Legacy" intruments (ones that I've recently used until I made the mistake of updating my sound library), but I definitely do not see them. There seems to be only a bare minimum of instruments listed in each of the three folders.
