When you zoom in or out while working on artwork, using the Zoom tool or its keyboard shortcuts, Illustrator brings the selected art in the center of the view. If the selection has anchor points or segments, Illustrator also brings those anchor points to the center of the view when you zoom in or out. To disable zoom to selection, go to Preferences > Selection And Anchor Display and then, deselect the Zoom To Selection option.

As a print designer, you may want to preview your artwork before printing and check how it looks in actual print size. For this, you can generate a print preview of the document in actual print size on 100% zoom.

You use the Navigator panel (Window >Navigator) to quickly change the view of your artwork using a thumbnaildisplay. The colored box in the Navigator (called the proxyview area) corresponds to the currently viewable area inthe illustration window.

By default, Adobe Illustrator sets the view so that all artwork is previewed in color. However, you can choose to display artwork so that only its outlines (or paths) are visible. Viewing artwork without paint attributes speeds up the time it takes to redraw the screen when working with complex artwork.

You can view your artwork as outlines in the GPU Preview mode in Illustrator on screens with resolution equal to or greater than 2000 pixels in width or height. Viewing artwork in the GPU Outline mode displays smoother paths and speeds up the time it takes to redraw the complex artwork on high-density display screens.

Trims the view to the boundaries of the artwork. In this mode, artwork with all non-printing objects on the canvas is hidden, such as grids, guides, and elements extending beyond the edge of the artboard. Any artwork falling outside the artboard is clipped. You can continue to create and edit your artwork in this screen mode.

In Presentation mode, the active artboard of the current Illustrator document fills the entire screen. In this mode, the application menu, panels, guides, grids, and all selections are hidden. It is a non-editable mode in which only the artwork on the artboard is displayed. This mode works well for presenting design ideas.

The standard Photoshop format. If your artwork contains data that cannot be exported to Photoshop format, Illustrator preserves the appearance of the artwork by merging the layers in the document or by rasterizing the artwork. For more information, see Photoshop export options.

By default, white strokes or fills in Illustrator artwork are exported to the AutoCAD formats as black strokes or fills, and black strokes or fills in Illustrator are exported to the AutoCAD format as white.

Exports horizontal and vertical point type in layers (including nested layers up to five levels deep) to editable Photoshop type. Deselect this option to rasterize the text instead if it affects the appearance of the artwork.

A sidebar that appears at the left of the screen with a variety of tools to select, create, and manipulate objects or artworks in Illustrator. These tools can be selected as following: drawing, typing, painting, reshaping, slicing and cutting, symbolism, moving and zooming, and graph.[22] Some tools have a small triangle at the bottom right of the toolbox icon. A small triangle has the option to view or expand some hidden tools by holding down the mouse button on the triangle.[23]

Some examples of basic tools in Illustrator are selection tools, paintbrush tools, pen tools, pencil tools e.g. Selection tools are used to the layout, adjust, and organize the artwork by selecting, positioning, and stacking objects accurately. Moreover, selection tools can group, lock or hide, and measure objects.[24] Paintbrush tools can be used to modify the appearance of the artwork. There are different types of brushes: calligraphic, scatter, art, pattern, and bristle.[25] Pen tools create straight and curved lines for the artwork and they can add anchor points to paths and delete from paths. Pencil tools allow the user to draw and edit freehand lines.

the main issue I have is that I've opened up an old illustrator file I need to edit and I cannot see any of the shapes or text that exists on the artboard. If I switch to outline mode I can see the shapes and text but when I switch back to Preview, the objects become invisible again, even though they are there and can be selected. You can even see them in the Layers window. Screengrabs attached.

In order for a printer to print your artwork correctly, it has to be able to interpret the images and data in your artwork file.

One common misstep that can cause label quality issues is outlining your file's text. In order for printers or other computer/graphics systems that don't have your font installed to properly interpret your file, you need to outline the text in your file.

This is a very easy process. It's as simple as selecting an option prior to saving your file. Here's exactly how to outline fonts in Illustrator in 60 seconds or less.

And that's how you outline fonts in Illustrator. This will help give your printing company the necessary control over your artwork to ensure the color and clarity are exceptional.
