use steel with google search bar

is there any way to use the Steel browser as the default browser with
the new google search bar?

Yep...

Clear your browser defaults (Menu>Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Clear Defaults)

Then the next time you search it should give you an option of browsers to execute the search. Check the use this by default box and select Steel.
