After a discussion it with the good Admiral I found out that I was not
the only member who could not get to Sacramento on a regular basis due
to living in the Bay Area. Also there is a definite lack of Steampunk
groups who get together to socialize in the Bay Area. That said I
would like to explore creating a Bay Area (more specifically San Jose)
auxiliary chapter of the Sacramento group. I would like to hear from
any of you who would be interested.

Hello Mr. Logan (Gene) -- allow me to convey that it was a delight to
meet you at the Sacramento Steampunk Society meetup in Old Sac at the
end of May. You added a lively and entertaining element to the
conversation and we enjoyed having you stop by. Please do keep us
posted as to the success of your efforts to boost interest in a South
Bay group. What fun that will be! Looking forward to seeing you again
at future events.

Cordially,
Miss Veronica

I and many others would welcome a Bay Area chapter.  I live in the east bay and I am embarrassed to say I have been to the Steamrats meetings in Seattle, but have yet not been able to make it to Sacramento for a meeting.  I would second the idea of having the meetings in or around San Jose.  At both Baycon and Fanime there were people interested in Steampunk who had traveled from as far north as Richmond and south as Santa Cruz.   It would be good to find a central location that we could all converge on at a regular interval.  I'm happy to assist you in your endeavors to form our own local chapter.  I know of many who are not currently part of the Sacramento Steampunk Society who will also be very interested.   Please feel free to contact me if I can be of assistance or when we are ready to get the word out.

Bravo for taking the initiative on this.

I too am from the bay area and would welcome some steamy gatherings
and activities of some sort in the local area. I doubt I will ever be
able to attend any of the weeknight Sacramento gatherings, and while I
do have friends and family in the area, even attenting just monthly
events may begin to strain hospitality after awhile, so some local
options would be wonderful.

As it says in our banner - the Sacramento Steampunk Society is
promoting steaminess throughout Northern California. The more
activity, the better for the Steampunk community in general.

Here are what I think are the keys to the success that we've had so
far:

1 Just start having regular in real life meetings - every week or
every other week - that's what creates the group solidarity and gets
the enthusiasm going.

2.Create a web communication site that copies all postings (either
individually or in daily digest form) to the members real email
addresses. Otherwise there is no way to announce a meeting or event
(or a change) in a timely manner. There are lots of steampunk
websites, forums, groups and blogs on-line - most of which nobody
checks on any regular basis at all. After a few weeks, people forget
all about them. (Feel free to use this topic on this site to
coordinate getting things started - Once we have our "dream" website
up and running you may want your own forum division on it for the
South Bay Area.)

3. The interested people with the talent exist - all you need to do is
provide a catalyst to bring them together and the chemistry starts
working on its own.

It seems to me that as large as the Bay area is, that there are
probably limits to how far people would eagerly travel to meet on a
regular basis. There is probably room for several meetup groups.
Gene obviously would want to attend a South Bay Area Group. Shadarko
is a Steampunk who lives in San Francisco proper and has been
promoting local events. Our Sacramento group includes people from
Davis and Roseville (about 20-30 minutes away from our Old Sac site),
but members have expressed the feeling that drives of over 45 minutes
are a bit long for the weeknight meetings on a regular basis.

My personal feeling is that driving two or three hours for the larger
weekend events is acceptable. My Daughter and I have attended the
SteamPowered, Steamcon, and Nova Albion conventions and do the Dickins
Faire every year. We are planning on attending the Handcar Regatta,
and our Steamtrain Excursion in Carson City, Nevada.
