Hi, fellow Steam Scholars!
I'm calling upon the collective wisdom of the list, and hoping that you might be able to suggest literary works about inventors, the process of invention, or any issues pertaining to intellectual property and copyright, concerning either mechanical invention, authorship, or other forms of creation?  I'm interested in works from any literary period, not just steampunk.
You can email me off-list if you think that is more appropriate: jeku...@syr.edu
Thanks so much!

While not itself steampunk, Samantha Hunt's novel about Nikola Tesla, The Invention of Everything Else, comes to mind as both a historical look at someone who has become an important figure in steampunk works and as an examination of the history of intellectual property (among other things).

Jessica,

All of these books deal with inventing:

Gibson, William and Bruce Sterling. The Difference Engine. 1990.
Priest, Cherie. Boneshaker. Tor Books, 2009. (first book of the Dreadnaught series)
Westerfield, Scott. Leviathan. Simon Pulse, 2009. (first book of the Leviathan trilogy -- the last book, Goliath, features Tesla)
Vanderhooft, JoSelle. Steam-Powered: Lesbian Steampunk Stories. Torquere Press, 2011.

Good luck on the project!

Lisa

Cherie's series is called the Clockwork Century series, actually.

Check out the Vandermeers' Steampunk anthologies too, some good
inventor/inventing stories, like Cherie's "Tanglefoot", which is set
in the same Clockwork Century setting.
