Feliz and contento are both shown as meaning "happy" in Duolingo. I am wondering what the difference between them is? In the sentences, I see "te contento", but never "te feliz". So is contento basically a progressive sort of adjective?

There is a subtle difference of a degree of how happy you are.
Contento is closer to the English "content" or "pleased."
Feliz means you're really very happy.
In both these cases, contento and feliz are adjectives.

Te contento would be translated as "I please you/I make you happy"
In this case, contento is the 1 person singular of the verb contentar which means "to please."
If you wanted to utter the same sentence with feliz, it would have to be: Te hago feliz.

Thanks for explaining that. It always pissed me off when I'd get sentences saying someone was "happy" and Duolingo rejected "feliz". Feliz means happy for goodness sake. How am I supposed to know from the tone of the sentence whether they mean content/pleased or really happy when they simply ask you to translate happy to Spanish.

To be honest, I have a similar problem with gustar and encantar, for slightly different reasons. I don't automatically translate "Me encanta" in my brain as "I love". So I was always getting those sentences wrong till I figured out what DL was looking for in terms of answer.

That motto has a historical meaning while Peru was a Spanish colonial administrative district known as Viceroyalty. Peruvians got their independency from Spain in 1821 and some years later (1825) Government started to coin that motto on Peruvian currency. Authorities were working to join all the departments of the country to become one and stronger. They wanted to become one also with Bolivia but it didn't happen.

Shamefully it didn't last so much. Government replaced the motto by "Banco Central de reserva del Per" (Central Reserve Bank of Peru) from the currency and practically lost visibility. That decision made that many Peruvians don't know that motto of their own country.

Each zodiac sign in Western astrology is linked to a specific range of dates in the year. Unlike Vedic astrology, where names can sometimes be used to infer astrological details, Western astrology relies entirely on the birth date.

Another important aspect of Vedic Astrology is the nakshatras, the lunar constellations or star clusters that the Moon occupies during a person's birth. There are 27 nakshatras, each with its own unique qualities, attributes, and symbolism. Each rashi contains two-and-one-fourth nakshatras in it. For example, Aries contains Ashwini, Bharani, and Krithika nakshatras.

The name you give a child at birth is like their numerological DNA - it is a blueprint of who they are, their talents and character traits, their likes and dislikes, and much more. So choose carefully and, if possible, consider an ancestral name, especially one that belonged to an ancestor who did well and lived a good life. But consult a numerologist for more insight and perhaps a little fine-tuning by changing a letter or adding a middle name.

You appear strong, powerful and confident. You would love to push yourself to reach higher goals. Others see you as someone with a good business sense. On the other side, you are egocentric and can be ruthless.

I took a basic module in Spanish and I am very interested in the words feliz and felicidad. Whenever I search for feliz it just brings me back to 'happy'. I think culturally and linguistically, they are different. I want to do a semantic analysis between feliz and 'happy' & felicidad and 'happiness'. Could someone help me out?

You can look at more sample sentences by putting "happy" into linguee.com. That's the short-cut approach. The more time-intensive, but more thorough, approach, is to look at the dictionary entries for the relevant words, in a dictionary that gives lots of usage examples.

Quiero estar contento.
Expresses a desire to be in a state of happiness, in the explicit sense of the word. It also has similarity to the cognate of content but, unlike where English's content implies a state of contentment or I daresay acceptance rather than happiness, in Spanish contento refers to the state of happiness.

Quiero ser alegre.
Expresses a desire to be a person that is cheerful. Cheerfulness is closely associated with a state of happiness and with being happy and fulfilled, but is reflective of personality rather than state of being or sense of fulfillment.

I absolutely agree with @DGaleano, there is no mayor difference semantically between feliz and happy. It's the most common translation used. But let's check what the dictionaries have to say about that.

Has anyone ever heard someone say "Alegre Navidad". My dictionaries all translate "alegre " to " merry" and "feliz" to happy. In English you most often hear "Merry Christmas "and only occasionally "Happy Christmas". In Spanish I've only seen "Feliz Navidad". Thank you for any responses to my trivial inquiry. May you all have a great New Year.

Well, we say 'Feliz navidad' because 'felicidad' is not like to be laughing or smiling all the time, it's something deeper. That's the main difference. Some people don't know this reason, and they just use this word because of convention. But it should be 'feliz navidad' and not 'alegre navidad' always... However, that doesn't mean you can't laugh or smile at the dinner

Well, here in New England if you say "Happy Christmas" it's sort of a joke, confusing the adjectives for Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. If someone is pretending to be drunk, they might say that, or if they were otherwise trying to be clever. The norm is Merry Christmas.

Another lap around the sun accomplished! We all like to feel special on our birthdays and be celebrated by our loved ones. If you have a Spanish-speaking friend who is having a birthday, then you should make them feel extra special by wishing them a happy birthday in Spanish!

This is the traditional Mexican birthday song. That being said, many Latin Americans of other nationalities know it and sing it on birthdays as well. It is a bit of a long song, so we will only put the beginning, which is the most known and sung part.

Starting with the basics, we learned that feliz cumpleaos is the standard way to wish happy birthday in Spanish. To take it a step further, we looked at some other happy birthday wishes in Spanish, and some useful phrases and questions related to birthdays. We also explored the meaning of the word cumpleaos itself to learn the similarities and differences between the English and Spanish versions.

To conclude, we learned that there is no universal Happy Birthday song in Spanish, but that it varies by country. Some cultures even have more traditional songs such as the Mexican song Las Maanitas.
