Hello all,
Please invite your students to attend:
A Series on Asian American Culture for National Library Week
Broome County Public Library, Saturday April 20th 12:00-5:00pm
Come and explore the colorful themes of important Asian holidays, such as Chinese Lunar New Year, Korean Lunar New Year, and Filipino traditions of Christmas. Included is a visual presentation with arts and crafts accessible to adults and children. Join us and learn what makes these holidays so important for communities abroad and in the United States. 12:00pm
Do you think Chinese characters are the most difficult characters to write? Calligraphy is a writing art with more than a thousand years of history. Learn the evolution of the seven styles of calligraphy. Get inspired by the stories of the masters and try it yourself. Join us for an interactive presentation of Chinese calligraphy. 1:00pm
Do you want to learn about Thai boxing? Come learn about the amazing history of Thai boxing and how Thai culture shaped this sport. Included is a visual presentation, interview clips of world and national Thai boxing champions, and live demonstration. 2:00pm
Who were the first Asian settlers of Broome County? Jumping from 1917 to the 1880's and back even earlier, we detail our surprising findings about unorthodox individuals who settled here at the turn of the century. We will feature maps of relevant locations and images related to their backgrounds and roles in local life. 3:00pm
Find at your fingertips a wealth of resources related to Asian culture and life in Broome County and larger New York. We have made it easier to find these resources and support Asian immigrants in their journey into local civic life. Join us as we present two newly designed web-guides where you can locate necessary resources for cultural enrichment and support. We will have Chinese, Korean, and Bengali interpreters on hand for audience members who need it. 4:00pm
Sponsored the Community Engagement Program (CEP) and the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE), both of Binghamton University, and Broome County Public Library
