Volunteer needed to act as a liaison between Marymount University’s
School of Health Professions and St. Charles to help coordinate the
Nurse Managed Health Center. Responsibilities include advertising the
programs in the bulletin and on our website, reserving rooms and
obtaining volunteers to be translators during the Sunday afternoon
blood pressure screenings and education programs which are held once a
month, usually after the 1:00 p.m. mass.
Time Required - The Center begins in September and ends in May.

Liturgy Writers Needed
Liturgy Writers prepare a presider’s guide in outline format for
Sunday and Holy Day Eucharistic Celebrations – the Mass. These guides
are prepared from various resources each week - in addition to the
priest-celebrant, the sacristan and the cantor (or music leader) refer
to this guide before and during Mass. The liturgy writer needs to
know the general outline of the Order of Mass, understand the church’s
liturgical calendar, and have good word-processing, e-mail and
internet access skills. The liturgy based knowledge will be provided
through a period of apprenticeship with an experienced Liturgy
Writer.
Time Required - For existing volunteers this is a once a month
assignment. Once trained, Mass outline preparation takes about 4 to 6
hours effort each time you are scheduled. Volunteers are asked to
commit for at least a year of service.

Sacristans Needed
The Sacristan’s duties involve sacristy set up and altar and worship
space preparation for celebration of Mass. The sacristan us similar to
a theater stage manager, but our “theater” is the celebration of
Eucharistic Liturgy and/ or other sacraments. The sacristan
coordinates the celebration of Mass smoothly, reverently and with
sensitivity. For a Sunday Mass a sacristan comes early and stays to
clean up, a total of about 1 ½ hours. Minimum period for a
volunteer's commitment is 1 year.
Time Required - During the apprenticeship period the new Sacristan
would need to be available at the same mass time period for about four
to six weeks. After the cadre gets enlarged, the goal is to have 1 or
2 week-end assignments per month.

Ushers Needed
Ushers help the entire parish community feel welcome at Masses and
other liturgies. They are the “face” of the community for visitors.
Some usher responsibilities are to: greet and welcome parishioners and
guests to St. Charles; graciously escort people to seats; recruit
volunteers to carry the bread and wine at the presentation of gifts
procession; take up the collection(s) at Mass and transfer the funds
to counters; alert priest or EMs to people with special access needs
for Communion. This role is critical during the major Liturgical
seasons of Advent & Christmas, Lent & Holy Week and Easter through
Pentecost when many special liturgies occur.
Time Required - The Usher ministry requires attendance at one of the
six masses that occur at St Charles over each weekend – and at special
liturgies during the major liturgical seasons. Regular weekend mass
attendance takes a few minutes before and after mass for a total time
of about 1-2 hours.

Minister of Art and Environment
The minister of Art and Environment is concerned with over-all décor,
use of art and symbols, arrangement of altar furniture, and flower
placement and care in the church and chapel. This ministry functions
in two major areas - one group works on a weekly basis to provide and
maintain greenery and floral settings in church and chapel; another
group does planning and placement of décor for major liturgical
seasons. These groups may collaborate on major seasonal efforts.
Seasonal work involves preparation of décor plans for Advent;
acquiring and arranging Christmas trees, crèche, and garlands. Lenten
Season décor involves tapestries, ambo/ altar coverings, and trim on
Stations of the Cross and over entrances. Easter Season décor
preparation includes placement of Easter and Pentecost hanging panels,
ordering and arranging of flowers.
Time Required - The weekly group spends about 2 hours each week in
preparing and arranging flowers when they are available. The seasonal
planning group spends about 4 -6 hours in design discussions and about
the same amount of time in actual placement of décor materials.

EXTERNAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) Needs Volunteers
AFAC is in need of volunteers to re-pack chicken two nights of every
month. Although chicken packing definitely isn't glamorous, it makes
a big difference for Arlington families who rely on AFAC to supplement
their groceries! Instead of a one pound pack of hotdogs, a person
eligible for supplemental groceries from AFAC can choose fresh
chicken. AFAC buys chicken in bulk and the chicken packing team re-
packs it into individual leg quarter servings.
Time Required - Second and fourth Wednesday of every month from 6:30
to approximately 7:45 PM; the next bagging is scheduled for December
8th.
