ESL Teachers, Assistant Teachers, and Substitutes Needed

·         We’re looking for teachers, assistants, and substitutes for the parish’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program for adults starting this September. Join our team of enthusiastic volunteers! Come help our fellow parishioners, both beginners and more advanced students, improve their English skills for use in the workplace and community. No teaching experience or Spanish language skills are necessary. Instructional materials are provided. Classes meet Sunday afternoon in the gym and adjacent meeting rooms, 2:30-4 p.m., from September 15 through late May 2014. (Optional summer 2014 teaching opportunities will also be available). Organization meeting will be scheduled in August.

·         Time: Approximately two hours most Sunday afternoons, from September 2013-May 2014, as well as class preparation time.

JustFaith Co-Facilitator Needed

·         We are looking for a co-facilitator for this year’s JustFaith class. JustFaith nurtures a person’s passion for justice and prepares him/her for social ministry. The Catholic version of the program has been repackaged to be more flexible and now consists of four phases, each with six two-hour sessions and an immersion experience with a social justice or social service organization. The program also includes opening and commissioning retreats, books and films that expose the deeper implications of poverty in the world, and faith sharing in a small group. The program is pre-written and prepared for facilitators to implement, so the tasks of a facilitator are to give some extra time each week to gather materials, coordinate logistics, or prepare to facilitate a session; provide some guidance and oversight to group discussion; and negotiate and be sensitive to the week-to-week needs and energies of the group. The JustFaith materials and the JustFaith Ministries Office are available to help facilitators.

·         Time: Weekly sessions on Monday nights at St. Charles at 7 PM starting in late mid-September

Facilitators for English Conversation Group

·         Help run an English language conversation group for adults in our community who want to improve and practice speaking English in a conversational setting. No teaching involved or foreign language skills needed, just talking and listening and asking questions to stimulate and keep conversations going. Conversation group will meet one weekday evening per week (exact day to be determined) from 7 to 8:30 at St. Charles beginning in September. Short organizational meeting will be held in August. Engage with members of our community who are learning English by sharing fellowship and conversation!

·         Time: Approximately 1.5 hours one evening per week

Help With Funerals

·         The Circle of Caring needs help with funerals. Volunteers would provide assistance to parishioners by completing funeral preparation tasks, including setting up the church, greeting attendees, handing out programs, and cleaning up afterward. Our bereaved parishioners are very grateful for our help.

KAIROS Prison Ministry

·         Volunteer with women from many Christian denominations to bring a3 ½ day retreat experience to Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women. The women in prison are mostly in their 20's, and 30's and have said, "I feel like a person again when you Kairos ladies are with us." Some are there for life. Most all meet Christ in this experience of community, forgiveness, challenge, and love, and we meet Christ in them in the laughs and tears.

·         Time: The retreat will take place October 10-13; planning meetings will occur in Woodbridge, Virginia on Saturday, August 3 and 24 and September 7, 21, and 28; a team retreat will occur October 9.

Baking Cookies for KAIROS Weekend

·         Bake and freeze cookies to be served at the October 10-13 KAIROS retreat. The cookies help to invite the women to come and are a sign of unconditional love from God through the community. If you are interested, please contact for specific instructions on what the prison allows.

·         Time: Cookies should be brought to the church October 5 or 6.

RCIA Sponsors

·         We are looking for several parishioners who are interested in sponsoring those seeking initiation in the Catholic Church through the RCIA process at St. Charles. A sponsor's role is to journey with those in formation in the RCIA process and be a supportive friend. You don't need to be an expert on "all things Catholic" to be a sponsor. The main time commitment of a sponsor is attending Tuesday night RCIA sessions, attending any special rites and retreats, and being available to support the person you are sponsoring.

·         Time: Varies
