Lanterns for Housing
A group of St. John’s, NL citizens calling themselves St. John’s
Citizens for Affordable Housing (STCAH) has organized an event named
‘Lanterns for Housing’.
“Our goal is to raise awareness about the growing housing crisis in
St. John's” says Aida ????
Another member of the group, Nicole Wilson states “We are fed up with
the current housing situation in St. John’s and we are fed up with
seeing the people around us struggle to keep a roof over their head”.
Despite the growing GDP of Newfoundland we still have many people who
cannot afford to purchase or even rent a home in St. John’s. Erin
Piatt, a member of the group says, “When working full time doesn't
mean you can afford to live without fear, rent is too high.”
There will be a free touton serving to accompany a display of lanterns
with housing facts and personal stories on them. We will then walk
with the lanterns to a new condo site planned by the Jumping Bean on
Harvey road.
The group is asking anyone who feels like voicing their concern about
the housing situation to make an effort to attend the event.
The event will start at 3:30 on December 17th, in Scotia Square,
Water St., St. John’s.

‘LANTERNS FOR HOUSING’
ST. JOHN’S, NL – A group of St. John’s citizens concerned about the city’s housing crisis is holding its first public event on Saturday, Dec. 17. It’s called ‘Lanterns for Housing’, and the group is calling itself St. John’s Citizens For Affordable Housing (STCAH).
“We are fed up with the current housing situation in St. John’s and we are fed up with seeing the people around us struggle to keep a roof over their head,” says STCAH member Nicole Wilson, who is currently writing her Master’s thesis on homelessness in St. John’s.
Despite Newfoundland’s growing GDP, we still have people who cannot afford to purchase or even rent a home in St. John’s. Erin Piatt, another member of the group, astutely points out: “When working full-time doesn’t mean you can afford to live without fear, rent is too high.”
A display of lanterns with housing facts and personal stories imprinted on them will be accompanied by a free serving of toutons. The group will then walk with the lanterns to a new condominium site planned by Jumping Bean on Harvey Rd.
The group is asking anyone who feels compelled to express their concern over the housing situation to do so by supporting the event with their attendance.
It will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 17 at Scotia Square, Water St., St. John’s.
