Shalom,

This is an appeal to your creative side. I'm asking that you suggest alternative avenues that might replace our Forums.

We've seen little activity in the Forums and are open to other ideas. This discussion group should serve as a sounding block for the ideas. You are welcome to invite others into the ring. They need not be members of the STC to offer ideas. However, they should join this Google Group to best participate in the discussion.

We're investigating online communities, such as facebook, LinkedIn online business network, etc. as one direction. Let's hear what you have to say.

All the best,

You are welcome to make use of elephant.org.il . Many STC members already check it regularly and I have given some members of the STC posting rights in the past so that they can use them to promote STC-Israel activities (unfortunately the STC has not made much use of those posting rights).

Many STC members are also registered users of elephant.org.il, so the infrastructure already exists to provide a combination of public pages and private pages that require user login.

If you are interested, just let me know.

- Svi Ben-Elya -

By the way, if you come to the Elephant getogether Thursday evening I can show you how to use direct access to the site.

Good morning to all,

Svi, your tireless efforts to pull more away from the STC never cease to...never cease. In the future, please use the Regional Groups Forum for promoting your group. Had you offered to envelope your online frameworks into the STC, we would be appreciative.

However, this was not the purpose of my opening of the discussion and I will clarify.

We are looking for alternatives to the framework of our Forums, not alternatives to the STC! I asked for "creative," not as in "competitive," but as in "unconventional." We know of the "other" privately run groups that exist for TCs in Israel; and they are not alternatives to our non-profit, international, professional organization. We are pleased that regional and other groups are there for our members. Ken yirbu !

We are looking for alternative formats (blogs, wikis, online communities, etc.) for presenting the wide range of topics for discussion and presentation we currently offer in our Forums structure, and more. They currently include:

Have a great day,

Moshe, I think you have been quite unfair to Svi. Rather than assume that he was trying to pull members away from the STC, why not assume that he simply responded to your request for help, with a potentially useful offer of actual help using the existing Elephant.org.il framework?

I am not party to any behind-the-scenes rivalries or machinations that might exist among the various Israeli TC groups, but what I saw on the surface in your message to Svi was quite rude.

Moreover, I think a retort such as yours to Svi, even if it were justified, should be send privately, and not to the entire list. Likewise, I would have sent this comment to you privately if the matter were not already on the list.

Despite all this, as an STC member of long standing, I wish you well in your efforts on behalf of the STC and the Israeli TC community.

Thank you Moshe, for your tireless efforts and volunteerism for STC Israel!!

As someone who formerly volunteered for the STC Israel web site, I would like to support Moshe's comments. It seems totally idiotic that there are private lists/web sites operating in Israel when everyone could swallow their egos and combine their efforts and expertise under one roof and save duplication.

In addition, the other TC lists/groups in Israel act under the guise of non-profit communities when in fact they are, in my opinion, a façade for promoting and marketing privately owned enterprises. Let's just call a spade a spade. If other lists/web sites/groups want to operate, that's perfectly legitimate. But don't go trying to promote yourselves as alternatives to STC, when in fact you are just promoting yourselves.

Now that I've added my 2 agorots' worth, we can kill this thread ;-)

My idea for a replacement to Forums....how about a monthly/bi-monthly HTML-based newsletter, with options to add comments/responses to the items in the newsletter (links from the articles to our web site?) - similar to the newsletters that STC main office sends us?

Personally (and I think there may be more like me), I just don't have the time to browse through forums and participate in discussions. If something arrives in my inbox, there is a slightly greater chance that I will take a peek at it.

We all know that even when there are many avenues for info, and lots of good ideas, etc., in our computer/Internet world usually just one idea wins out. See Windows, Google Search, Yahoo Groups, and of course Techshoret. If an Israeli tw wants info or to post a job they'll go to Techshoret. We don't have the desire to be on multiple forums and check a number of web sites.

I don't really see duplication. There's Techshoret and a few people are working on other things, which they're free to do.

The original question was, is there a way to get traffic to the STC Forums, and if there had been an unmet need, the forums would be active. Apparently there are alternative outlets which is fine.

Shabbat Shalom,

David

What is wrong with persons or groups, other than STC, providing services and resources to Israeli Technical Communicators? STC has to earn the trust, loyalty, and membership dollars of the technical writers of Israel. It is not entitled to them like an heirloom. As far as I'm concerned, the more the merrier. So what if some of this is driven by profit? At least it's there. Don't forget that STC Membership itself is costly too. And a significant portion of our dues supports administrative overhead in Virginia rather than activity here in Israel. Is that somehow more palatable than paying someone else for resources?

Currently, Techshoret, Elephant, and Framers_Israel are continuing to provide free and for-fee services and resources while STC Israel Chapter has almost ceased to provide any this year. This is a shame. STC Israel Chapter depends on voluntary contributions of time and sometimes personal expense from its members in order to be influential here. Some of us can give more time and expertise, some can give a small amount. Some have more aptitude for handling issues that come before the Administrative Council, some have skills better suited for managing and promoting other activities.

I've been associated with our chapter for about 10 years. There was a period where our hard work resonated with the membership and non-members enough that people were convinced to join the organization and also take on a voluntary task or two or three. A steady rate of activity, like lectures, conferences, mailing lists, salary surveys, newsletter etc., provided enough momentum to keep drawing in new blood to influential and leadership roles, even while some of the longer-term stalwarts were tiring. Almost all have been dedicated to their roles, and have done some tremendous work. However, the activities have dried up in recent years, and fewer people feel like volunteering or renewing membership. It's not enough for a small, nuclear group to handle the load. More of us need to help out.

I really don't see where anyone in the current chapter, including me, is in a position to criticize Elephant, or the Techshoret team, or anyone else providing services to the Israeli Technical Communication Community, while at the same time, our Chapter has allowed itself to become marginalized. The blame, and more importantly, the solutions are in the mirror. The more people that get involved at various levels of participation in the Chapter, the greater will be the value of our STC Membership.

And on a lighter note, this year's Competition winners will be announced soon. Keep an eye out for the news!
