Guys - do you remember Anbazhaghan from Ayanavaram...our history teacher in 7th or 8th std I think? The history lesson that is forever etched in my mind is the one related to the hanging gardens of Babylon with Nabopollaser and Nebuchadanezzar being the stars of the show (spellings are clearly wrong)....

Sudev, it use to go like this...

"Nalla paer vanga vendum pillaigaley....ini naadu enna etc etc nananaanannnaaaa .....pillaigalay...nalla paer vanga vendum pillaigaley.

Remember, PT sir Samuel's mouth organ, and then the old record player that was used for the national anthem.....then the 4-5 boarders to sing the school anthem live...come boys raise a song to the school ....

Ofcourse on few occasions the undersigned was also on stage...with Chukar mere man ko....etc etc...eh!um! thank you...thank you...thank you.

Guys, it suddenly feels we are all back to school with all you guys back. The not so recent centenary was quite an event, wherein we got to see our old teachers, father, etc. Met couple of them like Fr. Stanislaus, Fr.Sebastian, Neil D'Couto, Michael Sir, Amalraj, Johnson and all our attenders Chinappa, Nataraj peon of Dominic Savio. A day before the celebrations I and Ravi had beem to Bede's and Dominic Savio campus and my my what a stroll it was. Ravi, remember our encounter at the men's staff room. There were these new fresh bunch of sirs to whom we enquired about our old teachers and bang comes the reply in chaste tamil "THEY ARE ALL GONE" - Avango ella poi acchu...enna veno....sorry for my roman tamil ! Ravi, you could enlighten our guys with your histrionics.

Something very unpleasant that followed was at the school ground, where we had an afternoon filled with lunch, games, music et al. And all our guys (old bedeans and the present bedeans) hitting the bottle right on the ground in front of their teachers. There was this event management girl who was going on rounds interviewing the whole bunch on the field, one very old bedean probably from the 1965-70 batch cracked this joke justifying the on field boozing,  saying, do you know why I drink today, coz today is republic day and in tamil it means "Kudi"arasu Dhinam"

Gentlemen....why don't you all give your contact numbers as well...am sure you'll should  be having your mobile connections. Let me start of with mine...its +91-97909-67875.

Thats all for now.....lots to come from the footprints on the sands of time....

tata bye bye cheers

Hi Aejaz,

I do remember both the songs... you singing Chukar and Anbazhagan singing Nalla Peru.... Both of your were really talented I should say...

Do any of your remember the "Excursions" we had.... I can only remember two of them

1. We went to Aanamalai hills (I forget in which class)... my only memory is bathing in a flowing river and then having idli and sambar that was cooked with help from PT master Samuel using gaint aluminum utensils. I think on the way back we also stopped at Tirupattur where there was some other anglo indian school....

2. We went to Ooty (I think this was in Std X). In this one I remember that our accommodations were pretty cramped. I think about 20 of us were asked to sleep in a 20ft * 12 ft room and thats the closest I have come to being in a concentration camp. But other than that the trip was fun... I remember that throughout the bus drive up the hill one of the guys continuously played the tamil song on cassette player "Chinna Mani Kuyile" (starring Vijaykanth). Even today when I hear the song I get the image of the bus climbing the hills...

I have really begun to wonder how the human mind decides what memories to keep and what to throw away. This is quite fascinating. How can I remember such minute details from over 20 years back but I cannot remember what I was doing this time last week.... Maybe some of you doctors can try to answer... the only thing I can think of (at the risk of sounding too geeky) is that certain events evoke some special emotional responses (i.e. hormones) which then cause those memories to be "saved to disk" instead of being in "RAM".

For those in the US, happy long weekend

Hi Bala!!!
memory saved to the hard disk indeed....Actually the  neurons in the human brain are supposed to multiply only until the age of around 18y after which they are steadily destroyed throughout life..
But nevertheless, that excursion was to Amerthi Forest near Tirupattur..and we stayed at Don Bosco boarding school at Tirupattur. This was is standard 10.
The excursion to Ooty was in standard 9 in the year 1987 when we started by Blue mountain express on the night of August 14th... I vividly remember that in the compartment by which v travelled our Sundar started to sing Vande Mataram at the stroke of midnight along with S. Karthik. A few oldies travelling by the compartment were so incensed that they picked up a fight with Mr. Edward Packianathan who'd accompanied us..
Fun days...I guess I have the snaps of those 2 trips somewhere......I'll try and hunt them out...

Hey guys,

To add to Ravi's comment each of our memories are saved to our brains along with an associaion, such as Bala, you said when you listen to that song you r'ber the bus ride, and after many years when you listen or experiencing that association, boom...you recover that stored memory...isnt that fascinating, imagine the millions of associations and those memories which go with them...This is really great, cos each of us are indeed helping us all with recovering these beautiful memories...this is awesome...

Do you guys r'ber...when i think when Edward Sir (thanks to Ravi for that association) (math) on the first day of 9 or 10th std took his frustration on me when i had my head down and he started slapping me uncontrollably and then later called me and (did'nt apologize) said he had a tiff with his wife and was in a bad mood...so much for that huh...

Also do you guys r'ber the socials we used to go to, i think it was more after 10th, Aejaz used to have atleast one song and always won a prize for our school and ofcourse we used to have a play/skit choreographed by...i forgot his name...but Florence teacher used to take care of the plays in the school function.. I r'ber one particular play, where i played the king and had a really long dialogue which i still r'ber a bit.."sandhana katillele yanai thandha thotilley parati seerati valartha en ore magal rajakumarien thirumanathi naan seerum sirapumaga nadath pogeren...and so on and so forth and my daughter was S.Karthik??? hilarious times...Another play was when i played King Ashoka and Kapali and Bala (I think) was one of the Buddhist monks, Mahesh played Buddha.

More later...

Good times...

S
