Can I write test cases in python 3, or is python 2 enforced?

Re: title. It appears as if the project is expecting python 2, which means my test files must also be written in python 2. Is it possible to write it in python 3 instead?

It's only tested on Python 2. Any pull requests that bring it closer to Python 3 compatibility will be gratefully accepted. I'd start by configuring Travis to run the self-tests with Python 3 as well as Python 2.
