Hi Group, My Name is Greg Lone. I own the basket case 1912 Staver model 40 in British Columbia. I am grateful to Dave for putting this group together, hopefully all Staver owners and people interested in the history of the Staver company will participate. I thoroughly enjoyed the first part of Dave's Hemming's article and am looking forward to the second instalment.
I am a 51 year old Marine engineer, and have been interested in antique autos all my life. About twenty years ago I found my attention focused on the early teen's "brass era" automobiles. The ones I found interesting all had a rather high value, which was in excess of my limited budget. I realised if I was going to own a car from the early teens it was going to mean a project that I could work on as my finances allowed. About ten years ago I saw a advertisement at a swap meet stall run by Al Murry in Washington State. The car was one I had never heard of, a Staver Chicago. After some research I came to the conclusion it might be an interesting project. I contacted Al and went to his restoration shop to view his offerings. The project would require a LOT of work, but was definitely possible. With the exception of the lower part of the engine, most of the chassis was present. Unfortunately there were many parts missing
including the body, fenders ,wheels, and much more. I told Al I would think it over and went home. After a couple of months of contemplating I made Al an offer which he accepted. The remains of Staver Chicago #1276 were mine.
Progress since then has been limited. I had clearly underestimated how difficult finding parts and information was going to be. As well time has been in as short a supply as money. The demands of work and family always seem to take precedence over the car. Little by little things have progressed, but I had better have a long healthy life.
I look forward to hearing from others, and I welcome any help with locating parts. and / or Staver literature
Thanks Greg |
I'm located in Rochester, MN and one of my 'projects' has been to
determine my family connection to the Staver's. I'm working on it but
if anyone has assembled even a partial genealogical tree I would
welcome some conversation.
I'm also interested in acquiring one of the vehicles or at least
original items related to advertising and associated information. I
have a couple of tangible items such as a Staver watch fob and a
folding wooden ruler that advertises the Staver. I'll try to upload a
couple photos a bit later.
At any rate, great to see this group formed and I'm looking forward to
the dialogue. Have a great holiday season.
