Compass image-url() URL helper is not working

I am attempting to use the image-url() helper provided with Compass,
but it doesn't work. Here's an example of some source and its output:

The image only shows up in the #img2 div. I had the same problem a
while back, but I don't think I ever reported it:

Has anyone managed to get image-url working?
