Latest pre release is really slow rendering stylesheets

I am trying to update an existing project to use the latest
staticmatic, haml and sass. As part of the process I am converting
from sass 2 to sass 3. Everything works fine except for stylesheet
rendering. Pages that load instantly under the older versions take up
to 20 seconds to render with the new stuff. I have a lot of stylesheet
partials. Removing the partials removes the lag (but of course removes
my stylesheets which is problematic.

My current version of things is:

staticmatic-0.10.6
haml-2.2.2
chriseppstein-compass-0.8.17
Ruby 1.8.6

I am upgrading to:

compass-0.11.alpha.4
haml-3.1.0.alpha.145
sass-3.1.0.alpha.206
staticmatic-0.11.0.alpha.10
Ruby 1.8.7

Anybody else seeing anything like this?
