Hi All:

We’re considering implementing auto-renewal in Vermont.  Following a meeting on the topic last week, we had a few questions that I’m hoping someone from states that already have auto-renewal could answer.  It’s always super helpful to learn about successes and failures from folks who have already gone through the process.

Also, in general, we’re wondering how many states out there have it in place now.  So it would be great if you could provide an answer for #1 at least.

  1. Have you implemented auto-renewal? (Yes, No but Thinking About It, No and Not Interested)
  2. If so, have you been able to demonstrate increased license holder retention?
  3. If you have auto-renewal in place, any idea what percentage of your license holder pool have opted-in?
  4. Are there any states that use a smaller license vendor or an in-state built licensing system that includes the collection, encrypting and storing of credit cards?  Or have all states have that have implemented this done so through the larger vendors like Brandt, Kalkomey, NIC etc?

If it’s OK, we might want to speak in more detail directly with states that have used smaller vendors or in-house built systems, as that’s the situation we’re currently in as we contemplate this.

Thanks in advance!

Shawn

NJ has not implemented Auto-Renewal nor are we interested or able.

We don’t have enough staff to handle any issues/problems customers have with it and NJ has a Child Support Certification form that has to be filled in by the license holder prior to purchase each year.

Hi, Gina here from Maryand. I am really interested in the answers to these questions from other states. Here is where we are at-
  1. Have you implemented auto-renewal? (Yes, No but Thinking About It, No and Not Interested) NO
  2. If so, have you been able to demonstrate increased license holder retention? N/A
  3. If you have auto-renewal in place, any idea what percentage of your license holder pool have opted-in? N/A
  4. Are there any states that use a smaller license vendor or an in-state built licensing system that includes the collection, encrypting and storing of credit cards?  Or have all states have that have implemented this done so through the larger vendors like Brandt, Kalkomey, NIC etc?  We have a small in house license system and no autorenewal.    I am wondering if the storing of credit card data is held outside the license system, and held with a bank system?  We have a 365 term license and a high churn rate. It is our thought that auto renewal would really help retain anglers.

California:

  1. Yes, for fishing licenses only at this time.
  2. It’s likely too early to draw conclusions since this was only the 1st year of the program.
  3. Currently 1.5% have opted in (out of over 1.3 million anglers) but, like I mentioned in #2, its too early in the program to draw any conclusions.
  4. We do not hold CC info or process in-house not does our vendor. Aspira utilizes a “token” for recurring payment.

(Yes, No but Thinking About It, No and Not Interested) Yes, but we call it EZ Renew … it is not a completely automated process for some very good reasons.
  2. If so, have you been able to demonstrate increased license holder retention? We just finished our first full year. Plan to do an in-depth analysis this year to answer that question.
  3. If you have auto-renewal in place, any idea what percentage of your license holder pool have opted-in? About 10% of our total license sales
  4. Are there any states that use a smaller license vendor or an in-state built licensing system that includes the collection, encrypting and storing of credit cards?  Or have all states have that have implemented this done so through the larger vendors like Brandt, Kalkomey, NIC etc? We have an in-house back-end with an NIC front-end. We use NIC’s payment engine.

If it’s OK, we might want to speak in more detail directly with states that have used smaller vendors or in-house built systems, as that’s the situation we’re currently in as we contemplate this.

I would love to have a detailed discussion with states that have implemented as well as those that our thinking about this. There are lots of details to consider and I would be interested to see how other states are dealing with this (or planning to deal with this). Thanks, Bill

Thanks in advance!

Hi Shawn-
Wyoming does not have auto-renewal. 365 day licenses for fishing and bird/small game were implemented a few years ago, so we're ready for the next step of auto-renewal - but haven't taken it yet. Our license system is all in-house.
Good luck!

Shawn

Hello Everyone,

Idaho Fish and Game is working on formalizing some of our guidelines on when to obtain a photo release, and when it is appropriate to use photos.  We’re wondering if any other states have a general tutorial that helps coach employees on when they should ask for a photo/video release form, and/or when it is ok to use a photo – or not. Any guidelines that other agencies have put together would be very helpful as we begin to develop our procedure. Please feel free to reply directly back to me with information or questions at ian.ma...@idfg.idaho.gov.

Thanks you!
