Good morning Everyone,

Once again, we’re trying to develop a better picture of recent angling trends. Could states please use the table below to answer two questions about overall (resident plus nonresident) fishing license sales?

  1. By what percentage were your overall fishing license sales up or down in calendar year 2023 vs. 2022?
  2. By what percentage are your overall fishing license sales up or down for the first half of 2024 vs. 2023 (January through June)?

The change in the overall number of fishing licenses sold instead of dollar amounts is preferable.

Total Fishing License Sales % Change

Calendar Yr

State

24v23

Once this informal survey is closed on September 17, we’ll share results back to the group. Many thanks for your help!

Lisa, I talked to our license sales coordinator in Utah, here is what he said:

"For 2023 vs 2024, fishing license sales were up 2.8%. We are down 3.8% comparing the first half of 24 to 2023. But this, and I cannot stress this enough, is just licenses issued. It does not include those licenses that were purchased before these periods, but are still valid (ie multiyear licenses)."

Good Morning All,

Many thanks to everyone who participated in this informal survey! Below is the results summary from the 34 states that participated as it appears in the ASA Summit Trade Insights and Market Report that is being shared with Summit attendees in San Diego this week. Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks again!

MARKET TRENDS SINCE 2023 ASA SUMMIT

Since the last ASA Sportfishing Summit in October 2023, the sportfishing market at the retail level has entered a stable period after experiencing a peak and subsequent decline related to the global pandemic. Fishing participation over the next year is expected to remain steady around the levels last seen in 2019, provided there are no significant external economic shocks. Easing inflation combined with wage growth throughout 2024 has made fishing relatively more affordable than it was last year, though many anglers remain price sensitive. Retail inventories have generally returned to normal levels after experiencing shortages during the height of the pandemic, and higher-than-normal inventory levels in the immediate aftermath.

Angler Participation

— What’s happened so far in 2024? —

The ASA has been working in partnership with state fish and wildlife agencies and sportsmen conservation organizations to develop an R3 Dashboard that provides daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly license sales and participation trends. Results show license sales nationally and by region, participating state, gender, age, residency, and more (cahss.org/dashboard). Southwick Associates used R3 dashboard and polling data to identify the percent change in resident and nonresident license sales between 2023 and 2022 overall, and for the first half of 2024 vs. 2023 (January through June).

Among the 34 states that participated, fishing license sales increased just 0.5% overall in the first half of 2024 compared to 2023, with 20 states reporting increased sales. When comparing 2023’s fishing license sales to 2022, states saw a 2.1% increase, with 25 of 34 states reporting increases. This comes after reported license sales dropped 6% between 2022 and 2021, and 4% between 2021 and 2020. In summary, this indicator suggests 2024 can best be viewed as a stable, normal year with participation levels back to 2019 levels.

During the past five years, youth participation appeared to grow more than adult participation. This uptick may have boosted tackle sales but is not noticeable in state license sales data, given youth are generally excluded from license requirements. It is interesting to note that since 2015, according to the license sales dashboard (cahss.org/dashboard), the largest gains in license sales have come from the 35–44-year-old age group. Recent research conducted for Backcountry Hunters and Anglers (BHA) indicates much of their increased interest relates to wanting their kids to experience the outdoors and try activities they had little opportunity to enjoy when they were younger.

**

Best regards.
