I am looking forward to catching up with you all in DC in a few weeks.

We are re-evaluating our convention purpose and would love to get a handle on what everyone is doing.  Please take a few minutes and share some of your thoughts/experiences:

  1. Do you offer convention:               annually    every other year      not at all?
  2. Is your convention held:                 in state     out of state      alternate instate and out of state?
  3. Do you have a stated purpose for your convention (if so, what is it)?
  4. Do you partner with any other state, local association or allied industry on your annual convention?
  5. How many attendees do you typically get and what percentage of your membership does that represent?
  6. What is the typical length of your convention:     two days      three days    four days     other
  7. Is your program primarily:               continuing education focused      short topical breakout focused     combination of both
  8. Does your association consider convention as a member benefit that is:     partially subsidized         non-dues revenue source
  9. What is the profile of your typical attendee?
  10. Do you or have you tried delivering your convention via live streaming .  If yes, was it successful?   If not, are you considering replacing the live convention with some type of live streaming format?
  11. If your convention is successful, what do you believe is the driving force behind its success?  If your convention is not as successful as you would like, what are your thoughts as to why?
  12. General thoughts on conventions in general

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide your feedback on the above.  I will compile the answers and send them out to everyone.

In Maryland –

#1 Yes, Annually

#2 In state

#3 Member benefit, usually has annual “theme”

#4 Will solicit  sponsorships – MLS, Affiliate partners – but not true partner

#5 800 – 1100 – About 2-4%

#6 3 days

#7 A combination of both CE and topical sessions – trying to move away from CE to let locals do.

#8 It’s considered a membership benefit – hopefully a breakeven.  Anything above is a non-dues revenue benefit

#9 Mostly agent who have been in the business probably 4+ years.  Broker owners and team leaders are a smaller group.

#10 No

#11 Attendance has been dropping statewide.  More local boards/association offering local “conventions/mini ed days” that are local to their membership.

#12 Considering alternatives to a state conference – possibly partner with locals/provide funding locally, etc.  No determination has been made at this time. A lot of time and manpower does into our annual conference.  With reduced participation, these resources might be more useful elsewhere.

    1. Do you offer convention:               annually    every other year      not at all?
    2. Is your convention held:                 in state     out of state      alternate instate and out of state?
    1. Do you have a stated purpose for your convention (if so, what is it)? I'll see if I can find something official. I don't have it on hand.
    2. Do you partner with any other state, local association or allied industry on your annual convention? 2020 we will partner with Region IV but usually no. Our Local Associations will send a sponsorship in varying amounts.
    3. How many attendees do you typically get and what percentage of your membership does that represent? 1-3% of 29,000 (Spring 600/ Fall 300-500)
    4. What is the typical length of your convention:     two days      three days    four days     other SPRING 2-days/ Fall 3-days
    1. Is your program primarily:               continuing education focused      short topical breakout focused     combination of both
    2. Does your association consider convention as a member benefit that is:     partially subsidized         non-dues revenue source
    1. What is the profile of your typical attendee? late 40's mid 50's more female
    2. Do you or have you tried delivering your convention via live streaming .  If yes, was it successful?   If not, are you considering replacing the live convention with some type of live streaming format? NO
    3. If your convention is successful, what do you believe is the driving force behind its success?  If your convention is not as successful as you would like, what are your thoughts as to why? Marketing and getting the word out is both our success but also our downfall. Creating the value is a constant campaign. A struggle is the attitudinal change from members that come just for "cheap CE" and having the mind shift that this is business sustainable professional development.
    4. General thoughts on conventions in general. We value them and want to take ours to the next level to ensure members always have a place to come together.

Hosted by the Michigan Realtors®, The Convention offers a full slate of CE Marketplace certified knowledge sessions, networking opportunities and new products and services for our members and industry professionals in an upscale environment.

      2. Do you partner with any other state, local association or allied industry on your annual convention? No

      4. What is the typical length of your convention: three days

      3. If your convention is successful, what do you believe is the driving force behind its success?  If your convention is not as successful as you would like, what are your thoughts as to why? The success of our convention has much to do with the quality continuing education we can provide through top rated industry speakers, as well as a diverse offering of industry support in our growing expo. Technology also plays a large role in the success as we strive to continuously improve our processes to be more efficient and accommodating to our attendees.

      4. General thoughts on conventions in general Conventions are a great benefit to those who take part, as well as the clients they serve. Professional Development is a crucial part of strengthening the industry. 1.             Do you offer convention:               annually    every other year      not at all? Plus an additional business meeting

          2.            Is your convention held:                 in state     out of state      alternate instate and out of state?

          3.            Do you have a stated purpose for your convention (if so, what is it)? Yes, primarily business meetings with EXPO & education secondary

          4.            Do you partner with any other state, local association or allied industry on your annual convention? We work with the local associations located near the conference.

          5.            How many attendees do you typically get and what percentage of your membership does that represent? ~2,000, less than 2% of membership overall

Involved member, usually serving on committee OR new attendee. 25% are GRI graduates

          11.           If your convention is successful, what do you believe is the driving force behind its success?  If your convention is not as successful as you would like, what are your thoughts as to why? Even though we have a limited number of participants, I think it’s still considered successful, primarily because it’s main purpose is the business meeting.

          12.           General thoughts on conventions in general With the number of large local associations we have, it’s challenging to provide something they wouldn’t get (from a regular member perspective) that they don’t get at their local annual conferences.
