I hope you all had a fantastic and safe Holiday weekend. I have been asked to research how many state licensing regulatory bodies accept Code of Ethics classes for license renewal. Please help and tell me 3 three things about your state's CE requirements:

1. Does your state require ethics as a license renewal category?
2. Does you state allow Code of Ethics classes to fulfill licensing renewal requirements? If yes, under which class category would it fall under? (In Arizona, it would fall under our Commissioner's Standards class category)
3. Does our state have a license renewal class category specifically labeled Code of Ethics or is it just Ethics or Business Ethics?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Hi Barb!

The topic of ethics is incorporated in a mandatory (core) license renewal course, but there is not a specific ethics course or ethics category for continuing education

The NAR Code of Ethics course is offered as an elective course which counts toward license renewal.

Any ethics course submitted for CE credit would have to be the Code of Ethics or business ethics, as opposed to a course exploring the merits and significance of ethics in general.

Hope you’re having a great summer!

Rod

Hi Barb,

In Michigan for CE as it relates to license renewal, we do not have a specific Ethics category. We do have a requirement that each year licensees must obtain 2 hours of topics involving real estate law and/or legal topics.

Code of Ethics does count towards the renewal requirements, most often as a 3 hour elective course as we do not certify COE as a legal topic.

Hope this is helpful, please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Have a great day!

Darryl
