It is with the deepest regret and heartfelt sadness that I inform you of the passing of one of our original USGenWeb members and great genealogists, Jan Cortez. Jan was found deceased in her home in Michigan on April 10. The authorities believe she passed quickly the previous day, April 9, due to a heart attack. She requested no funeral. Her son and family were in attendance at her burial on April 13 in Ladner Cemetery, Stanwood, Mecosta County, MI, by Daggett Gilbert Funeral Home.
I don't know of a time in USGenWeb without Jan Cortez, and it's hard for me to imagine USGenWeb without her. She has been a staple of our community and a huge contributor to our resources. Jan has been a member since 1996 and contributed much to the Tombstone Project for MI. She was listed as MIGenWeb Archives Coordinator in 2002 and served as MIGenWeb State Coordinator from 2003 until her untimely passing. Jan also served as NENC CC Representative from 2003/04 - 2006/07, and then as NENC SC Representative from 2007/08 - 2008/09. She was CTGenWeb SC for the past several years and recently became the GAGenWeb ASC.
Jan truly loved USGenWeb and contributing genealogical resources for posterity. She remained an extremely responsive member and State Coordinator right up until the end. She was even communicative to members and visitors when previously in the hospital while being treated for some health issues. No one could ask for, or expect more from such a dedicated member.
I considered Jan a friend in USGenWeb, a friend in genealogy, and a personal friend. Thank you, Jan, for all you have contributed over the years, and for all of the lives you've touched and helped on their family history journeys.
Jan, may you rest in eternal peace and never be forgotten.
With condolences to her family and her USGenWeb family,
