There appears to still be a few county links on some State websites that no longer work because they are pointing to the old
rootsweb.com URL. Please see the below information on how to fix the links, shared by Pat Asher, EC Dataset Manager. Thank you, Pat, for supplying this helpful information!
As most of us know, when the
rootsweb.com web hosting servers crashed several years ago, Ancestry changed the server names when they restored the accounts. The old
www.rootsweb.com server where USGW accounts were located was renamed to
sites.rootsweb.com.
There is a redirect in place, but it doesn't always work. While checking for alternates for bouncing email addresses, I discovered that if the tilde preceding the account name has been coded using URL encoding for the tilde, i.e.
%7Eaccountname instead of
~accountname
it will fail (most of the time).
The TOC's for project sites should be checked to be sure any links to rootsweb-hosted sites are coded correctly and actually work, i.e.
https://sites.rootsweb.com/~accountname/
County coordinator's links to neighboring counties will also fail if not coded correctly.
