Our Project has 12 Project-level Google Group email lists managed by the AB. Six of the lists we have are required and used, such as Board-L, Board-Exec, USGW-Elections, USGenWeb-Grievance-Committee, State-Coord, and USGenWeb-All

BUT, we have 6 other Project-level lists that have little activity other than Project Announcements: Discuss-L (68 members), USGenWeb-Discuss (37 members), USGW-NENC (29 members), USGW-NWPL (65 members), USGW-SEMA (49 members), and USGW-SWSC (22 members). Some of these members are subscribed to more than one of these lists.

The AB proposes that we discontinue the 6 Google Groups above, create a new USGW-Members Google Group, move all members subscribed to the above 6 lists to the new Members list, and invite all USGenWeb members to join. The goal is to provide a single list that any member may subscribe to for asking questions, sharing ideas, polling members, helping each other, and keeping abreast of Project news.

Before moving forward, the AB would like your input! Please let us know by Oct 19 if you think this is a good idea, or if you have any concerns.

Your opinion matters!

Sounds like a plan but I do have a question or maybe two.  What does the ALL list do and am I subscribed to it?  LOL

Is there any way to eliminate a list?  For example Shirley never shared her password for the MTGenWeb membership list so it was necessary to make a new one.  The new one's password is shared with the ASC as it should be but I know MT is not the only state this has happened in the past.

Thanks much,
Karen

I wish we could find something better than google groups. Anybody have any ideas?

Randy, there is groups.io, not saying it's better, just another option.

To view the list in a browser, you have to be logged into Google using the email account that's subscribed. It will be the same email you are subscribed to here and have listed on the State Coord page as your email. If you have multiple email accounts, you may have to log out of google and log back in with this email account.

For example, I have multiple email accounts. If I want to see the groups I manage, I have to log in with my cemeterian@gmail account.

That is one of the things I don't like about google groups, they just don't work for people with out gmail, you are not really a member of the group, you feel like your eavesdropping? lurking?

Randy,

Groups.IO = Free groups can have up to 100 members; For growing
groups, our Premium plan at $20/month (or $220/year).

Nonprofit organizations looking for free email providers should
consider the following options:

Mailchimp: Offers a free plan with up to 500 contacts and 2,500 emails
per month. It includes basic features like tracking geographical
information and creating segments based on email interactions''

Thanks Tim,

I really like Groups.IO, I was thinking that we would have to pay for the ability to "add" members, I had no idea about the 100 member limit!

Has anyone been in a
"Discourse"  community? I was looking into it for the EC Software Research Committee, it is kind of a cross between an old time forum/mailing list and facebook.

It's really popular, I have ended up in 2 Discourse groups, I don't love it, but I like it a lot better than Facebook, but that I can barely & rarely use.

Some of my county sites use groups.io, and I've been happy with groups.io
BUT if 6 of 12 GoogleGroups are discontinued, and 1 new group is created, I think the new group should also be a GoogleGroup. I'd prefer to stay consistent with our other six remaining USGenWeb Project groups.

If memory serves me correctly, the lists prefixed by USGW- were set up one for each region; with Discuss being for those folks of a more political nature instead of being on USGenWeb-All.  Some folks preferred not to have their inboxes filled with such.

Curious to see how much use the current lists were:

USGenWeb Discuss-L - last post 9/2019
Discuss - L - last post 8/15/25
NENC - 6/1/25 - all posts for the last 3 years by the NC
NWPL - this week - it seems to be the busiest list of the lot
SEMA - 10/7
SWSC - 10/7 - (4 posts in 2025; 6 in 2024)

However, if one wanted to keep their list, would the administration take a poll of the individual members on each list to see if they were in favor of keeping the status quo or moving to another platform?
