All,

I got this email asking for advice and/or help. I told Patrick I would put this out to our community. If you have ideas or solutions, please respond to him directly and identify yourself as a USGenWeb member.

Thanks!

Subject: Genealogy Data Transfer

To whom it may concern,

My name is Patrick and I’m looking for some support or guidance on an issue we have with transferring an incredibly large family tree. What started off as a free site to store our family history has grown to over 12,000 members. We currently use Family Echo and worried that at some point this site might be eliminated, a data security breach or someone possibly deleting information. Because it has grown so immense I don’t know how to transfer that to an Ancestry or similar site. I did reach out to Ancestry.com but they couldn’t assist me, I also have reached out to State Genealogy in Nebraska, but they haven’t responded to my emails. HELP!

Thank You,
Patrick Peterson

If he has the ability to save it as a .ged he could upload it to Family Tree and then to Ancestry. But, he will lose any documents attached. Would have to do that manually.

FamilySearch has the option to create a private tree and a closed group for viewing, updating, etc.

I highly recommend this option for a variety of reasons:  privacy, future sustainability, and the ability to search/attach directly from FamilySearch results are just three of them.

Someone on the FamilySearch CET support team can guide him.
