It is with deep regret that I must inform you that the USGenWeb Archives and the Tombstone Project are expected to go offline on July 7. We must now prepare for this reality.

This development was both unexpected and without advance notice. For many years, Joy Fisher generously provided and personally funded the hosting and domain services that made the Archives possible. David and Debra Crosby devoted countless hours to the technical management and maintenance of these systems, ensuring that this invaluable resource remained available to researchers.

Unfortunately, due to declining health, Joy is no longer able to manage the hosting accounts, including updating payment information or transferring ownership. At the same time, USGenWeb is not financially able to support the cost to migrate the Archives to a comparable dedicated server environment. It is also important to understand that the Archives are far more complex than a collection of HTML pages and text files. Much of the system relies on an integrated database, tools, and specialized infrastructure, making any transition a significant technical undertaking.

There is, however, encouraging news. David has maintained a complete backup of the Archives on a secure offline server. The data itself has been preserved, and this remarkable body of genealogical information has not been lost.

Our immediate challenge is to identify a sustainable path forward. Doing so will require time, technical expertise, collaboration, and financial support. While this turn of events is disappointing, I am hopeful that, working together, we can develop a long-term solution that preserves this important resource for future generations. David is committed to working with us to bring the Archives into the future, with Debra's support as she is able.

On behalf of the Project, I ask that you join me in expressing our deepest gratitude to Joy, David, and Debra. Their extraordinary generosity and dedication over the decades have benefited countless researchers and families and have been an asset to our Project. Their contributions to the genealogical community cannot be overstated, and we owe them our sincere thanks and appreciation.
