I am transitioning from Windows to a Mac. Though it is 99.9% the same
on OS X as on Windows there are a two things I have not been able to
replicate.

1. Docking windows: In windows you can dock the command window (and
the results and variables window) to the results windows. On the Mac
they are separate floating windows which you have to manage
separately. This is a big pain when, for example, you want to move
the Stata windows to another desktop if you are using spaces. Is there
are way to dock all of the windows together so they move as one
window?

2. Multiple instances of Stata: In Windows, it is possible to have
multiple instances of the Stata GUI in use at the same time. I have
heard that this is not possible on OS X. Is this true? I know you can
open up multiple instances in the terminal by typing /Applications/
Stata/StataMP.app/Contents/MacOS/stata-mp . This is almost as good
since I rarely use the GUI features, but in some cases it would be
useful to have 2 GUI interfaces running.

Any insight from all you Mac gurus would be greatly appreciated.

Hi J:

Re Docking Windows:

No, there is no way to dock windows in the Mac OSX version. However,
you can set up a couple of preference files to deal with the multiple
monitors- spaces issue. I use spaces and always have Stata in Space 4
of a 2x2 setup. (Go to "System Preferences>Expose&Spaces>Spaces" to
pin Stata to a space).

Next, when I plug into an external monitor, I also want Stata to move
to that external monitor, so I moved all the windows to the locations
I wanted, and then I created/saved a new preference file.

You can create/save/use these pre-defined preferences settings using
the "Stata Menu>Preferences>Manage Preferences>" drop down boxes.
However, you could also invoke these quickly by using the command
line.
If you have 2 sets of preferences saved, one without the external
monitor (mainprefs) and one with the external monitor (ext_monitor),
then you can type:

win man prefs load ext_monitor
win man prefs load mainprefs

to toggle between them. Better yet, you can put these lines into your
profile.do:

global F5 = "win man prefs load ext_monitor"
global F6 = "win man prefs load mainprefs"

and then you can just press your F5 and F6 function keys (you'll hit
enter after pressing the function key because it will insert the
commands above into the command window) to toggle back and forth among
the preference files.

RE Multiple Instances of Stata:

Yes, you just need to navigate to your /applications folder and make
duplicate copies of your Stata.app file (right click and select
"Duplicate"). Just name them sequentially and open as many as you
would like.

Thanks Eric. This is golden!

By the way for other wanting to know more about using the terminal to
launch Stata (either the GUI or in the terminal), here is a page that
describes that.
