Hi All,

Two quick things:

1.  Hike Tomorrow!  It looks to be brisk but beautiful.  As a reminder, you can meet Ballard at Church at 9:30 to car-pool over to the trail, or meet at Burnt Mills West (near Trader Joe's on 29) at 10:00.  Dress warmly.  Rumors have circulated that some may go to Ledo's afterwards.

Phone numbers, for last minute questions or directions:

Ballard (cell) 301 502 3806
David (cell) 626 710 6542

Hope to see you in the morning!

2.  Adrian White, a youth in our congregation, has approached the church to find an Eagle Scout Project.  These projects are to be designed and executed by the scout, so this is not about us giving him a prepackaged idea to carry out.  Rather, do we have general ideas that he could think about how to address?  One idea we came up with on Buildings and Grounds is to improve wheelchair access somehow on the campus.

What sorts of ideas can the Environment Commission suggest?  I'm thinking:

- Install a number of rain barrels (one is not a big enough project)
- build a rain garden (or maybe more than one) such as between the big parking lot and the sidewalk

Other ideas?  Details not needed, but this is a good time to brainstorm.

Just a note, Wheelchair access on campus would probably be out of the realm of an Eagle Scout.  This is all done through a big department on campus and I have to say that all buildings are wheelchair accessible.  The age of the buildings leads to some very creative thinking but we do have access to every classroom and main building on campus. Every new building has been built within code and are very accessible and I think that all of the campus meets the current requirements.

Sorry, David.  We won't be able to join you.  As I feared, the girls and I need to go dress shopping (Christmas pics on Tuesday! whoopee!).  Trust me, we'd all rather go hiking, no matter how brisk the weather (no one in the Utz household enjoys clothes shopping).  Hope you all have a wonderful time.

As for the Eagle Scout project, I like all of your ideas.  Here are my thoughts on each:

 - I assume the wheelchair access on "the campus" refers to the church property [campus].   This is a wonderful idea, as it is extremely hard for disabled individuals to get anywhere inside the church building except the sanctuary.  My only concern is that this may be too large of a project for one person.  I'm not familiar with the requirements for Eagle Scout projects, but it does seem awfully ambitious.

- I love the rain barrel project.  I agree, it should be more than one and could maybe include the Episcopal Student Center.  Again, not being familiar with all the Eagle Scout requirements, I can't say how much is enough, but if possible, I'd like to see Adrian educate the congregation on the use of rain barrels, maybe in a tour of the barrels once their installed and a little hands-on instruction in maintaining and using them.

- Again, not familiar with Eagle Scout criteria, but re: the rain garden, my thoughts are similar to my thoughts on the rain barrel project: maybe more than one garden and some educating of the congregation on rain gardens.

I was wondering, that definitely is a good idea!
