Hello Enviro Commission folks!

It's been a while since we met, so while the calendar is looking a little busy, we thought we'd see if we can get in a meeting in February. We'd like to talk about the plans for the St. A's garden, the need for a volunteer to lead the Earth Day stream cleanup, a new book suggestion, and other upcoming events.

Here's a link to a Doodle poll that suggests two Fridays (Feb. 17 or 24) and Tues. Feb. 28 or Wed. Feb 29. These seem to be the best options since the next two Mondays are taken by Presidents' day and a vestry meeting, and next Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday, followed by Ash Wednesday. David will be out of town most of next week.

The Anacostia Watershed Society has asked us if we can lead the stream cleanup again this year. It will be held on Saturday, April 21, probably at the same location we had last year (we get to choose). Unfortunately, neither David nor I will be available to lead it. Would any of you be able to? That involves coordinating pickup of the trash bags, gloves and T-shirts, answering questions (as you can) and encouraging volunteers to stay safe. The AWS is hoping to hear from us by Feb. 15, but if we can't let them know until after the meeting, that's ok. The alternative is participating in a cleanup lead by a UMB group at a site on the Paint Branch of the Anacostia, which is also close by. In that case, we'd just need help recruiting people from St. A's.

The Buildings and Grounds Commission (which is meeting Tuesday, Feb. 14) is discussing getting approval to remove the holly tree that is in the middle of the area proposed for the garden next the student center. We're also trying to make sure that the students in the student center are still committed to the project and able to sustain it if we help it get built.

Marjorie has suggested we read "Crow Planet: Essential Wisdom from the Urban Wilderness" by Lyanda Lynn Haupt. The NYTimes Book Review says "In a lyrical narrative that blends science and conscience, Haupt mourns the encroachments of urbanization, but cherishes the wildness that survives." More info is at http://www.lyandalynnhaupt.com/.

Please let us know if you have other topics to add to the agenda. We hope to see you soon.

Kathleen & David

Hi Kathleen

Saturday, Aug. 21 is Global Youth Services Day and I am heading up a group of AFS students to do a community service project that day.  I think that the Anacostia Stream cleanup would be a great project.  Do you have a name of a person at AWS who I can contact?  These are high school (ages 16-19) aged kids from all around the world.

Maureen

Ballard, my thought exactly! Accompanied by Mexican jumping beans, of course.

...and guacomole for the dip (avocados are reasonable these days!).
Course guacomole has nothing to do with Sadie Hawkins Day but is great
at a Sadie Hawkins Dance!
