Hello:

Long time user of several other UML object browsers and really glad to see that feature exists in StarUML (linking objects across diagrams).

I have a problem on a UseCase diagram: I cannot link an Actor to anything else other than a Use Case.

It seems to be a limitation with the software - not a bug.

"Invalid connection (UMLAssociation)" is shown when trying to associate an Actor with any of the following:
  • Rectangle
  • Rounded Rectangle
  • Ellipse
  • Package
  • Use Case Subject
  • Frame
In other UML diagraming software, I am always allowed to create an association between an Actor and any of these.

But StarUML limits me from this basic representation in my modeling techniques.

Can this be added asap?

Thank you,
Eric Duncan

Hello Eric,

Thank you for your feedback. StarUML try to keep compliance with UML standard specification. According to UML specification, association is allowed to be connected only with classifiers (e.g. Classes, Interfaces, Signals, Enumerations, ...), but now allowed to be connected with non-classifiers (Packages, Shapes, ...).

We understand that sometimes connecting any two elements (event it is invalid) is useful to represent something you intended. So, we will consider to provide a line-style linking (not association) between any two elements.

Thanks,
StarUML Team

Hello!

I think you meant to say "but NOT allowed to be connected with..."  :)

Understood and thank you for the suggestion of a line-style link between any two objects.  This is what the architectural tools in Visual Studio allows to fit with different kinds of design and analysis of brainstorm sessions.  So it would really help!

Thank you!
Eric
