Here is what Rob Nichols and I are working on for the fall. We want to connect student talent at UCA and Hendrix with the startup community. I can tell you Hendrix students do not understand this whole startup thing and are mostly looking for either gradschool programs or jobs at large corporations after they graduate. Students from out of state want to get out of AR. We want to show them that there are innovative exciting companies that need smart students with specific skills. I can't really speak to what is going on at UCA, but I'm sure there is untapped talent for what little I've seen.
The idea for the event is based on what Brad Feld suggested. Instead of having companies come out to our schools and give their pitch about how great it is to work for Axiom/Windstream/Stephens, we will have students interested in working in the startup world give one minute pitches selling themselves. Best pitch gets a cash prize. We'll invite all the startups in the area and they can jump on the best talent. We are also hoping student will realize each others talents and start talking about starting their own companies. Rob has offered up funding for the event so we will have food and everything taken care of.
Pitches should be pretty entertaining since they are literally personal. Does this sound like fun to ya'll? Will startups come?
